NFL 2023 Off-Season Thread

Aside from those involved in criminality, I cannot think of a single NFL player who has tarnished his reputation so severely over the last couple of years. From my perspective, he went from “funny, relatable, down-to-earth star QB” to “whiny, petulant, arrogant, conspiracy-theory asshole” quite precipitously.

I ran across this opinion piece yesterday, from a small paper in central Wisconsin. It’s an interesting read (even with a few typos), and amounts to: as Rodgers became a star, he also became more motivated by personal achievements, became less of a team player, and was more willing to place the blame for lack of playoff success on others.

But what about 00?

I do wonder about that. If it was good enough for Jim Otto and Ken Burrough…

Dan Snyder has reportedly received at least 2 offers for the Commanders - both meeting his stated $6 BILLION asking price. Astonishing that even a shitty franchise in complete turmoil and disarray is worth that to anybody.

Well, the presumption among many is that the Commanders are shitty and in turmoil and disarray due to the presence of one Daniel Snyder. Once he is removed, the franchise can’t do anything but improve.

On ESPN’s ticker yesterday it said Jets head coach Robert Saleh said they were in no hurry and would be fine bringing Rodgers in for training camp in late July. Ugh.

This is going to work out great, lol.

More importantly:

In a new twist, Douglas squashed the idea of pivoting to Jackson or showing interest in the Baltimore Ravens’ star as a way to create leverage against the Packers. Jackson, who tweeted Monday that he requested a trade on March 2, received the nonexclusive franchise tag from the Ravens and is free to negotiate with any team.

“First of all, Lamar Jackson is a fantastic player, but where we stand is, it would be disingenuous and negotiating in bad faith if we went down that path,” said Douglas, a former longtime Ravens scout. “We have our plan, we have our process and we’re sticking to that. … We’re never going to operate in bad faith.”

This is wild to me. They are saying that they are so committed to Rodgers that any negotiation with Jackson would be “bad faith”. If the Packers are asking for 2 firsts wouldn’t you rather have the younger, more athletic option? Why wouldn’t you use it as leverage to force the Packers to make the deal?

This is straight up malpractice.

It could be that the Jets made what they termed their “best offer” to the Packers, and the Packers said, “either sweeten it further, or you need to wait until June for us to actually make the deal” (i.e., so that they can spread the dead cap money over two years).

So, there might well be an agreement in place, and especially if no one else is knocking on Green Bay’s door for an offer (and as Rodgers has said he’ll accept a trade to the Jets), then there’s no rush.

Or, alternately, there’s no agreement in place, and it’s just a staring contest between the two teams at this point, waiting to see who’ll finally blink.

The only rational answer is that they have an agreement in principle. They’ve both agreed on terms and that it will happen after June 1st.

If there is still negotiation happening, both the Jets and Packers are behaving crazy. Everything they’ve put out there suggests that both teams are operating like it’s a done deal. If there’s still risk of an impasse that would be foolish.

Forget it Omniscient. It’s Jet Town.

This is Gettleman level fuckery.

Hopefully the Giants and Jets will stop having so many injuries now.

Interesting factoid I just heard on a television sports channel.

With the Seattle Mariners making it to the playoffs last year, the title of “longest playoff drought in major American pro sports” fell to the Sacramento Kings, who hadn’t made it in 16 years. And now…

So who now owns that not-so-illustrious title?

I read something similar recently. The Chicago Cubs have not won the World Series in seven years, which is the second-longest drought in team history.

Ha! Nice.

Random Q.

Where does everything think Jalen Carter lands after all the bullshit with him?

Some Mocks have him in the 7-9 range. Others have projected him as low as 18.

My gut is that it’s closer to the 10-15 range than the 5-10 range. Maybe even as low as 20. The deadly crash is obviously a major issue and several teams (Raiders being a notable one) have said he’s off their board entirely. From a NLF GMs POV that Pro Day performance is probably s more damning outcome. There were already significant questions about his effort and commitment so to see him complexly flop in what should be an easy test ought to be terrifying.

Laremy Tunsil fell from top 3 to 13 after an incident that was 5% as bad as Carters situation and nothing about Tunsil’s issue was on-field. Carter showing up fat and unprepared for a workout is a big deal.

Honestly, if I were a GM I would probably avoid him until Day 2 or maybe the last 4 picks of the 1st for the extra year of control. But I know there’s always someone without scruples and a gamblers mindset who will take a chance.

I don’t think every single team will pass on him and someone is going to grab him day 1. I will be shocked if he falls to the second round. I think having him drop more than that would take something more, like a health issue, or if he got into new legal trouble between now and then. But I agree with you that there are a few teams that are going to see his talent and not care. He might go late in the first round, but he’s going to go on the first day, I am almost certain.

The Jets announced that they have added a former Packers quarterback to their roster. No, not the guy you’re thinking of…

We’re in a bit of a lull in the NFL offseason, leading up to the draft at the end of the month, but Odell Beckham Jr. announced today that he’s signing a one-year deal with the Ravens, after having sat out 2022 while recovering from a torn ACL suffered during Super Bowl LVI.
