NFL 2023 Off-Season Thread

As someone who’s had a snowball fight in Wrigley field in April, a toboggan is not out of the question in Green Bay.

Auto-correct gives Bears receiver Dante Pettis the worst nickname imaginable for an NFL player:

I actually laughed out loud.

Cardinals release DeAndre Hopkins. All about the $$$

He wasn’t going to have a good year in Arizona anyways, with Kyler being hurt, and even when he comes back, he’s still Kyler.

Now that is somebody the Giants need.

My first thought was the Dolphins as a team needing an extra piece

Don’t the Dolphins already have the top wide receiver duo in the league?

Exactly. One more weapon for Tua.

The Patriots are (or should be) desperate for a top tier WR, but I’m not sure Hopkins fits well in their system.

I think wide receiver is one of the last things the Dolphins need. What they really need is a quality veteran backup quarterback. As much as I root for Mike White, I’m skeptical that he’s the answer when Tua goes down for the playoffs.

The reporters for the Dolphins noted White’s noodle arm when he first appeared for OTA’s. It doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.

But the biggest holes on the team are at inside linebacker and on the offensive line.

Wideout is a place where the team feels good, although adding another weapon like Hopkins would be ridiculous (I doubt the salary cap would work, though).

As it is, the team is excited about the playmakers it has. Rookie running back Devon Achane is small but another really fast player, and could be a weapon for the offense.

Oh, and Tua is noticeably thicker than before, and his passes have more zip. Hopefully, the off-season conditioning (including martial arts training) will pay off and he can endure a full season.

That’s good news. He’s one of those guys where I start getting nervous watching him play. Extra size should help.

Not sure if this deserves its own thread or not, but apparently Will Ferrell has been cast as John Madden in an upcoming biopic of the man:

Frank Caliendo would have been a better choice.

Not an auto-correct. The Twitter “source” is a known goofball. Still kinda funny.

The Bears, who have appeared to have been all-in on moving to northwest suburban Arlington Heights, including buying the old Arlington Park property, and beginning demolition of the racetrack there this week, are now publicly indicating that they are also entertaining other possibilities, particularly west suburban Naperville.

This all stems from a tax re-assessment of the Arlington Heights property by the Cook County assessor, which increased the assessment (and, apparently, the tax bill) by a factor of five. Naperville, OTOH, is in a different county (DuPage), and one assumes that any other towns with which the Bears talk would also be outside of Cook County.

In my head that went down very much like this:

To me it feels like leverage. A message to Arlington Heights to cut the shit and play ball.

Oh, no doubt, though I’m not sure how much of it is being applied to the city of Arlington Heights, versus the Cook County Assessor.
