NFL 2023 Preseason Thread

I didn’t realize until yesterday that there was a week between pre-season and the regular season. I was looking forward to the Thursday night game to kick things off. Is this week in between something new or has it been this way for a while?

I wonder how many teams, other than the Cowboys, are willing to take on new QB’s at this stage. I’m sure that Belichek’s strategy took into account that there haven’t been any major QB injuries this pre-season.

The NFL avoids Labor Day weekend, so that part is not new. People often travel for the 3 day weekend and it’s the first weekend of the college season.

Got it. Makes sense.

No, I remember there being a “bye week” every year after they set their rosters, each team preparing for their opening game.

This. The season used to start on Labor Day weekend, without a gap week between the final preseason games and the start of the regular season, but they changed it starting in 2001, for this very reason; they felt that it depressed interest in “opening weekend.”

Michael Bidwell, current nepo-owner of the Arizona Cardinals is being “sued” (through the NFL arbitration system) includes allegations of discriminating on racial grounds, retaliatiatory firing for not cheating, and harassment by ex-VP of player personnel Terry McDonough.

Former head coach Steve Wilks testified that when Steve Keim was suspended by the league in 2018 for DUI, Bidwell provided burner phones and forced Wilks and McDonough to communicate with Keim with them in clear violation of the NFL rule. When McDonough, at Wilk’s behest, told Bidwell they were uncomfortable with this plan, Bidwell yelled at him and wrote him up for “insuborination”.

There are also allegations of other events of Bidwell being aggressive, foul-mouthed, and harassing to staff, including berating Wilks with a string of cuss words while Wilks 9 year old son could hear.

Not that evidence of the Cardinals’ organization being a mess isnt already massively available, but sworn testimony of the cheating is new.

They may be regretting letting Dan Snyder go. He was a convenient lightning rod, running a franchise nobody really cares that much about. All the other owners’ free passes have now been revoked.

I couldn’t remember how it was that far back.

“They won’t have ol’ Danny-boy to kick around anymore!”

And the Patriots pickup another QB to back Jones.

Interesting trade logistics here:

Last year, the Panthers traded up with the Patriots in the 3rd round to select Corral. The Pats received a 4th round pick, which they used to select Bailey Zappe, and a 3rd-rounder this year, which they used on LB Marte Mapu, who was a pre-season standout in camp.

One year later, the Patriots have Corral, Zappe and Mapu, and the Panthers have…nothing.

The 49ers have entered the chat.

Here’s a 20 minute video of Patrick Mahomes being interviewed by Chris Simms. I Simms’s interviews with QB’s even though he fanboys a bit in this one.

It’s Mahomes so I would give him a pass.

(No pun intended.)

I definitely get it.

Just letting everyone know / reminding people that we have NFL pick 'em and survival pools, everyone is welcome to play.

All charges against Patriots cornerback Jack Jones have been dropped. If you recall, he was arrested in June at Logan airport with 2 loaded handguns in his carryon. Charges included possession of firearms without an FID (which carries a minimum 2.5 year sentence in MA) and possession of a firearm in a secure area of an airport. Charges were dropped in exchange for 1 year of pre-trial probation & 48 hours of community service.

It seems his defense was based on someone else packing his bags for him, so the DA couldn’t prove he had knowledge of what was in his bag.

There’s not a doubt in my mind that if the Patriots had won 13 games last year and gotten to the divisional round that Jones would have been released by the Patriots the day after his arrest and would be currently trying to work out a plea deal with only 2 years of prison. Must be nice to have Mr. Kraft on your side.

That is a pretty sweetheart deal, indeed.

Who the fuck doesn’t pack their own bag? What is he, a child? And if you are actually packing someone else’s bag, why the fuck would you put two loaded guns in there and not tell them?! C’mon. Anyone who buys that cockamamie bullshit I’ve got a bridge to sell you, cheap!

Being charitable, some players have hangers-on. If he asked one to pack his bag, and they packed it thinking it would be checked and not a carryon.
