NFL 2023: WEEK FOUR leaf clover

Circle November 9 on your calendar. That’s when we play Carolina, the only other winless team in the NFL and probably the only team left on our schedule that we have a chance to beat. If we lose that game, it may be ANOTHER year before we win again.

Note: We get Carolina’s first round draft pick at the end of the season, which means that, if both teams truly are the worst in the NFL this year, the Bears will get the first AND second first round picks in the draft.

I toured Wrigley Field, it was glorious weather in Chicago yesterday

Not quite the same situation. In looking at the play-by-play, the Eagles had a first down at the Washington 34 yard line at the two-minute warning. They ran a play that gained six yards, whereupon Washington called their second time out. On the next play Hurts threw the TD pass.

Now, had they run the ball on second down, and not converted a first down, Washington would have called their 3rd time out, with about 1:40 to play. If Philly runs again on 3rd down and converts a first down, then they can run the clock down to a few seconds a kick the field goal. But if they DON’T get a first down, then they are kicking a 40+ yard field goal with about a minute to play, which gives the Commanders a chance to tie or even win the game.

In other words, they would have needed to convert a first down to run the clock down to the final few seconds

And I was hoping that Washington would go for two to win the game at the end of regulation.

Same. What ever happened to riverboat Ron?

OK, thanks for your analysis. I listened to the game on the radio and the commentators said that Philly could have run the clock down , but clearly they weren’t giving us the full situation.

And, yes considering that the Commanders offense had been playing pretty well, I thought Rivera would have gone for the win after the last TD too.

From my eyeball test, Carolina seems like a better team than Denver, which has a putrid defense. Granted, Carolina now has a worse record, but they haven’t been totally blown out in any games. Their worst point differential in a single game was 14, and their average point differential is 8.75 (unless my math is totally bad). They’re only the 8th worst team in the league going by that stat.

The Giants actually have the worst average point differential right now (since they’ve only played 3 games, Bears still have the worst total point differential).

But the Panthers might be their best shot at winning this year given their schedule I guess.

If Chicago wanted to tank intentionally for draft picks, they’re doing a spectacular job. That’s not even an insult, they got lucky that Carolina is also floundering right now.

Russ Francis, a tight end for the Patriots and 49ers in the 1970s and 1980s, died in a small plane crash in Lake Placid, NY yesterday.

Francis made three straight Pro Bowls (1976-78) for New England, then retired from football for a season, due to unhappiness with Patriots management – including the fact that the team had apparently tried to cancel the health insurance of his former teammate and roommate, Darryl Stingley, who had become paralyzed after being hit during a game.

Francis came out of retirement in '82, when he was traded to San Francisco, where he played for another 5+ seasons, and won a Super Bowl ring.

He was also a decathlete, held the national high school record for javelin for seventeen years, was briefly a pro wrestler, and became a pilot after retiring from football.

Is that true? I never heard that before.

These articles indicate that it’s true.

4th and 1, Seahawks are running well… sure, attempt a pass. Pete Carroll really likes passes at the wrong time.

Don’t think it will really matter at this point. Giants have zero offense, and now they’re flagged for holding…on their own punt.

Giants are making the Seahawks 2nd and 3rd string O-line look real good.

You didn’t realize how right you’d be when you posted that. The announcers are running out of ways to say the Giants are screwing up every facet of the game.

Maybe Drew Lock will get some quality game time

Whoever has Seahawks D/ST on their fantasy football team, congratulations on your win this week.

I wasn’t watching, so I went to the box score. Holy crap.

  • 9 sacks (so far)
  • 2 interceptions, one returned for a touchdown
  • 1 fumble recovery

Peyton and Eli are really put out. They both have that look of when parents “aren’t mad, we’re just diappointed.”

Good coaching! Lock getting some gametime reps. Hope he gets a pass or two in.

I really feel for the fans.

Every time they cut to them, they’ve got that thousand yard stare - the one where you can tell exactly how good the team is currently playing and how painful the rest of the season is going to be simply by their blank, dead-eyed expressions

Seahawks did okay.

I knew that if they had both Devon Witherspoon and Tariq Woolen out there, New York would be in trouble. I did not realize how dominant Witherspoon was going to be.

I think they spent their 5th overall pick wisely.

Well they are clearly in the bottom now. -21 point differential for that game, they’re looking up at everyone else right now.
