George/Warren didn’t want to start work early (maybe George needed to talk to mom first). They supposedly met for like 3 hours. So getting ahead of the 9AM call wasn’t happening.
They legitimately didn’t plan to fire him today. George might have dug in his heels and it took Poles all morning to change his mind. So postponing the call and creating a media storm only to come back and not fire him would have been catastrophic.
Down by a point to the Colts, on the final play of the game, the Patriots attempted a 68-yard field goal by kicker Joey Slye, which was on target, but fell just barely short – it probably would have been good from 66 or 67.
The Seahawks/Jets game was so ridiculous that if it was the plot of a movie people would have called it too far-fetched for the screen.
All of the points the Jets got were due in some part to special teams blunders by Seattle. Leonard Williams who is over 300 pounds gets a pick six off Rodgers with a 92 yard return. Each team had a PAT blocked by the other team. Seattle’s punter got hurt which forced the Seahawks to go for it on every 4th down after a certain point and one way or another they converted every one (often helped by Jets defensive penalties). The only exception was a 4th and goal from the half yard line which resulted in a 20 yard sack!
And I’m still leaving out a lot more crazy stuff because this post is long enough. In the end, Seattle takes care of business and after a Cardinals loss by 1 in Minnesota, Seattle has a solid spot at the top of the division (for now).
Next week, Seattle faces Arizona again to try to widen that lead further.
Only two bits of info to add to the Eberflus firing. Per Windy City Gridiron, he lost the locker room after the hail Mary play with Washington and that Poles was looking to fire him weeks ago after the Patriots game, but was blocked from doing so.
On top of that, Flus is the only Bears coach in the history of the franchise to never beat the Packers.
It’s small potatoes but this is the same dude who randomly punched a Bears player on the sideline. The guys wasn’t even in the game; and of course the refs threw no flag and the league didn’t fine him…because Bears.
The NFL has fined Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair about $11,000 for punching Bears running back Roschon Johnson on the sidelines during Sunday’s Bears-Texans game, according to KPRC’s Aaron Wilson.
A video of that incident:
You’re right that there was no flag, though. Given how they were surrounded by Bears, officials might not have been able to see the punch as it happened but the league sure did.
Orchard Park (where the stadium is) is a bit south of Buffalo proper, and they’ve been in an even heavier area of lake-effect snow over the weekend. This article indicates that, as of this morning, between 20 and 23 inches of snow had fallen in Orchard Park.
Aaron Rodgers had a not-great game against the Seahawks: 21 out of 39 passing, with a red zone pick-six, and only 2 out of 14 on passes of 10+ yards. After the game, interim coach Jeff Ulbrich gave a less-than-enthusiastic endorsement of Rodgers’ status as next week’s starter:
I think it’s a push. A snowy field makes it harder to change directions when running, and to get a grip with your cleats, but that might actually favor the offense a tiny bit, since receivers know what their routes are, whereas defenders need to react quickly and change direction suddenly when a receiver turns.
Yeah, it’s not a “traditional” snowstorm – it’s all been lake effect snow, really focused on the lee side of the various Great Lakes. Places like Cincinnati and Foxboro are many miles away from the lakes, and aren’t affected.
Here in the Chicago area, we’re close to Lake Michigan, but we’re on the windward side, and we haven’t gotten anything. It was sunny and bright here today, too.
Here’s a map of what was forecast to fall, and where, over this weekend. You can see that Buffalo is at the northern end of the big band along the east/south shore of Lake Erie.
