NFL 2024-25: Week 13

I think they are going to need to make a fake slide illegal.

Tough to define. If the QB slows down a bit, is that a fake slide, or just him deciding which way to run next.

I don’t think this is that difficult at all. I see running QBs legally tackled all the time. I see them slide all the time. 99.9% of the time there doesn’t seem to be any issue that I’ve seen.

I don’t recall ever seeing this. Got some examples we can look at?

I’ve seen it, and I thought there was a rule on the books against it.

No luck on finding anything on the NFL’s side tho.

Oh, sure, there are legal tackles all the time. It’s just that 1-in-a-thousand where things go wrong. It kinda reminds me of when I’m walking toward someone head on, and I move right just as they move (to their) left. Then we both go the other way. Then we both stop and someone says “thank you for the dance”. The DB goes low, the quarterback starts to slide, the DB goes lower, etc. It doesn’t happen often, but it would be great if it didn’t happen at all.

I’ll try to look for some examples later.

It also reminds me of when teams would run to the line and spike the ball to stop the clock. Worked great, and everybody got used to it. The defenses took it for granted, until some team figured out that they could fake it and get an easy completion.

Yes, there have been some memorable examples of that over the years. This one from Dan Marino is the one that sticks in my memory the most: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02mhqOF0oi8

I feel like teams aren’t really doing the fake spike anymore. I don’t remember seeing anyone try this in a looooooong time.
