NFL 2024-25: Week 8

I did not know this. Ignorance fought, once again.

So…if a TD scored with no time on the clock results in a lead of 3 points or more, then the PAT attempt is not played. But since a blocked extra point that is returned to the end zone is worth two points (as is an interception or fumble return on a 2-point conversion), then the PAT attempt must be played if the lead is 1 or 2 points.

Correct?

I believe so, but if I’m not, I hope someone more knowledgeable can correct me.

Well the Browns certainly got away with one. The Ravens were just sort of uncharacteristically and comically inept. Jameis Winston’s stat line looks really good because they dropped about 6 passes that should’ve been interceptions. I heard the play by play guy say “dangerous pass” about 10 times. And the Ravens’ receivers hands were actually worse than their DB’s. Just awful boneheaded plays that are totally atypical of the Ravens.

They’re generally the much better team, but haha, fuck 'em.

Exciting game even with all that. Jameis needs like 5 yards to get into FG range for a game sealing range so fuck it I’m goin’ deep. Ravens had 4 shots at the end zone to end the game. Fun finish.

I still kind of half-assed watched even though the Ravens are always the most hated opponent and not having Watson there makes it so much easier to watch the team. Hard to regain that enthusiasm. Especially since they’re probably best served by losing out and drafting a QB.

Winston threw for 334 yards when Watson couldn’t even pass the pathetically low bar of 200 on the season. Maybe we’ll get a gunslinger spark, a punchers chance, like with Flacco last year. The Browns wasted this entire season because the stupid fucking owner couldn’t admit he was wrong – with Winston (or better yet, keeping Flacco) they’re probably a playoff team.

The rule (8.2.c) says a try attempt is made except if “…a touchdown is scored during a down in which time in the fourth period expires, and a successful Try would not affect the outcome of the game.” (bolding mine)

So I don’t know for sure, but the word “successful” suggests that you don’t have to attempt the try as long as you are ahead by any number.

Yeah, that’s how I’d interpret it, too. Thank you!

Agreed! Thanks!

And Carlson went 3/3 on field goals, including a 50-yarder, and 3/3 in extra points.

Carlson marks the fourth kicker to make a field goal for the 49ers this season, including punter Mitch Wishnowski in emergency duty. That’s probably a franchise record, but it’s a tricky stat to look up.

Some teams don’t retire numbers at all, such as the Raiders. I occasionally get a tiny big bugged to see someone running around with Freddie Biletnikoff’s 25, but it’s their franchise and their rules.

I think Detroit has to be considered the best team through the 1st half of the season; it’s been a long time for them too (1957). KC won yet another squeaker, against the aforementioned hapless Raiders, and Mahomes is either in a very bad slump, or has hit the decline phase of his career; leads the league in INTs.

While I don’t disagree with your assessment of the Lions, I will take a bit of an exception to your take on the Chiefs. Yesterday their victory over the Raiders was close only in that Vegas scored with 2 minutes left to make it a one-score game, and KC only needed to cover the onside kick to ensure victory. Mahomes’ interception yesterday was a tipped pass, and he threw for 262 yards and 2 touchdowns. While he certainly hasn’t performed this season like he has in past years, he looked much better yesterday than at any point thus far this year. Obviously one game doesn’t mean a turnaround, but it does give us Chiefs fans hope going forward.

Mahomes is also playing without his two top WRs, which has made a for lot of forced throws and mixed signals. Also not helping is that the left side of the O-line is truly truly terrible. Next week will be interesting - the Bucs are really good, and the Chefs are pretty banged up.

The Bucs are an interesting team. They are 4-4. They have victories over the Lions (Detroit’s only loss), Washington, Philly, as well as the Saints. But they’ve lost twice to Atlanta, lost to Denver, and lost to Baltimore. The only currently sub .500 team they’ve played is New Orleans. I don’t know if they’re ‘really good’, but they have certainly held their own over one of the toughest schedules thus far.

And the next two games are the Chiefs and Niners. After that, the schedule softens a bit, with the Giants, Panthers, and Raiders coming up.

Ahhhh… and then it was he who tipped it? So perfect to watch the Universe make someone humble…

Packers quarterback Jordan Love (groin) and cornerback Jaire Alexander (knee) were both injured in yesterday’s win against the Jaguars. Both underwent tests this morning, and neither of them appear to have suffered significant structural injuries; the status for both this upcoming Sunday, against the Lions, will depend on how they progress over the week.

While I expected the Ravens to beat the Browns I did thnk before the start the the Browns were starting their best QB.

A battle of the kickers going on in Pittsburgh tonight! 9-9, midway through the third quarter, all points scored via field goals.

Also, interestingly, not a single turnover in the game so far.

Wilson and Jones suddenly have back to back fumbles. You’ve cursed them.

And a Jones interception to end the game. The Giants were driving for perhaps a tying score with a fair amount of time left.

Pittsburgh defense hit Jones a lot. Offense couldn’t get in the end zone. Joseph with a bunch of short field goals.

I would be particularly feel frustrated if I were a Giants fan, because at numerous points they seemed just on the edge of putting it all together.

Week 9 thread

I’m just happy that the Giants didn’t stink up the joint. As a Giants fan I consider that a win.

Is it too early to start eyeing next year’s QB draft prospects?
