NFL 2025 Offseason Thread

That kind of undersells it.

Your post sort of implies that he killed himself instead of facing charges over the unlawful discharge of a firearm into the ground, at least if you don’t read the entirely of the links. Dude was on a mission to destroy lives.

Yeah, it was facing justice for vehicular homicide that I assume was his biggest concern.

His father posted a message to social media after his son’s death to say that you should never overlook signs of mental illness in a loved one. I think that kid had problems for a while and they were masked because he was so athletically talented. It’s a story we see a lot in football. Aaron Hernandez was sort of the poster child for such a thing but there are a lot of examples.

While not exclusively in the SEC, it certainly seems to show up there with the most frequency.

Lacey was expected to face a grand jury for the homicide charges today. So safe to assume there’s a direct connection.

If you want to be super cynical about things, it could also be his family trying to excuse his behavior by citing an illness. Essentially making him another victim. I suppose every example of antisocial behavior is by some definition clinical, but I would hesitate to lump these various things together. People are still patting the Eagles on the back for drafting Jalen Carter, so I don’t know what to say.

Christmas falls on a Thursday this year. In keeping with their Thursday holiday tradition, the NFL has scheduled three games for 12/25/25. Two games will be aired by Netflix and one by Amazon.

One week until the draft and every team still has their original 1st round pick, something that’s never happened before.

I thought I saw on sportscenter (or maybe PTI) that it’d been ~25 years since, and that time ~25 years ago everyone still had their first round pick 5 days before the draft.

From nfl.com:

The 2025 selection process marked the first year in the common era that all 32 teams possessed their first-round picks at the start of the new league year, per NFL Research. That truth still holds.

Not only is it rare for every club to make it to Draft Day with their first-round selection, but if none of those top picks are traded before April 24, it will be the first time since 2014 that no first-round selections in the upcoming draft were moved between the start of the league year and the first night of the draft, according to NFL Research.

Everybody’s favorite conspiracy-theorist self-medicating 40-something QB, Aaron Rodgers, made a lengthy appearance on Pat McAfee’s ESPN show today. In short:

  • He claimed to still be undecided about his future, and might retire; he said that he’s been very busy with his personal life since the end of last season
  • He refuted the idea that he’s seeking a big paycheck to sign with a team
  • He praised his conversations with the Giants (who went with Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston) and Steelers
  • He criticized the brief meeting he had with the Jets in February, in which they told him he was going to be released, feeling it was disrespectful, and a waste of his time (he flew into New York from California for the meeting)

I have a really hard time picturing a team that would be willing to bring him in at this point. He now has a well-earned reputation for being a distraction (and, frankly, an asshole), and for demanding an oversized role in team decisions, as well as zero reputation for being the kind of veteran who is willing to mentor a younger quarterback.

And I’m sure if the Jets didn’t fly him out, he’d call them out for the disrespect of firing him over the phone.

What a friggin’ prima donna

Yeah, here is the “praise” Jordan Love gave him.

“I learned a lot. I was able to watch a great quarterback, how he works every day, how he handles business in the locker room, interacts with teammates, how he attacks every day,” Love said. “Just being able to sit back as a quarterback and observe him, observe his footwork, how the ball comes out of his hands, just how he practice every day and takes that into the game. There’s just very valuable stuff. I was able to sit for three years and kind of just pick his brain and watch him work.”

Note, he had to keep his mouth shut and just observe Rodgers. No way was Aaron going to actually help him in any way.

That just makes me like Jordan Love more. Not just because he’s a great QB (he is) but because he succeeded despite having no help from Rodgers, and after the Packers received so much criticism (especially from Rodgers) for drafting Love in the first place. It’s like every win from Love is a middle finger to Rodgers, whose career has been in the opposite trajectory since Love became the starter in Green Bay.

That’s the kind of focused and dedicated leadership that every team is looking for!

That was my exact thought when I heard him complaining

Hadn’t seen this previously. Just an amazing fact.

Due mostly to the very weak QB class. On paper anyway. Sometimes you find a Tom Brady in the 6h round.

I think that’s probably a secondary factor at best. Most often teams trade future 1sts in previous drafts or for veteran talent well before the new league year.

Trades between the start of the league year and the draft are usually pretty rare. Those are the types that will typically be driven by a given QB class.

Yes, one common situation is where a team has a superstar but has cap issues (and/or an unhappy player who wants a change of venue). So they offer that player for trade, and ask for a 1st round pick because this is a guy who can help you win today as opposed to a draft pick that could be wasted on a bust if you aren’t lucky. Then they shed themselves of that superstar’s contract while they hope to get someone good and cheap (rookie deal) in the first round of the draft. Happens all the time. It’s weird that it didn’t happen this offseason for anyone, not one team.

There are reports now that it would have happened this year. The Giants were trying to get the #1 pick but were turned down.

There are also rumors that the Giants like Dart in the 2nd round. If that’s who they think is their QB of the future it’s a gamble to hope he’s still available

We’re definitely in the disinformation window. Best to treat every rumor as meaning the exact opposite is more likely true.

That said, I think it’s likely that 3 QBs go off the board on day one. Between the Steelers, Saints, Jets, Giants, Browns and Titans, at least 3 of them are likely taking a QB. The Giants best chance at getting Dart would probably be a trade back into the late first round. Plus, they get the extra year of control.

Cam Ward seems like a clear first-rounder, probably the #1 overall pick to the Titans. I know they have Will Levis, but he hasn’t worked out and it looks like they expect to get more value from drafting a replacement than trying to get Levis a weapon in Travis Hunter. Hunter is insanely talented but QBs are just worth more. I’d see the Browns then grabbing Hunter at the second pick.

After that, Dart and Shedeur Sanders are probably the ones most likely to go in the first round, though I see pundits saying either could fall to the second round. But I have the same hunch as you that we’ll see three picked in the 1st round.

It’s kind of weird. The Titans have been extremely quiet. Everyone has made up their mind that they are taking Ward and there doesn’t appear to be much intrigue, but compared to last year, there’s a deafening silence around the pick. There’s little benefit to the Titans to give a bunch of misdirection here, so it’s probably unremarkable, but still feels different.

It’s probably just noise, but more than a few “insiders” have been promoting the idea that Milroe could be the 2nd QB off the board. Others have ranked Shough ahead of Sanders and have predicted a precipitous fall for him.
