Yeah, I remember that. I was on the fence about that rule. I liked the idea of being able to overturn an obviously bad call, but I also didn’t like stopping the game for the review. In the end I didn’t really care either way and think it’s fine with or without the rule.
Oh, Browns. You will never stop Brownsing.
They now have 6 QBs on their roster. Let’s break it down.
Deshaun Watson
Yup, he’s still on their team. He is currently recovering from his second Achilles tear. The team is better off if he stays injured. It gets messy if he plays.
Kenny Pickett
Currently nursing a hamstring injury, he hasn’t been able to practice for over a week now.
Dillon Gabriel
Has been limited in practice with a “tight” hamstring injury. Doesn’t sound serious, but he’s not at 100%.
Joe Flacco
He’s 40 years old. He’s no Tom Brady. He’s definitely not someone you want to have to rely on. I expect they’re going to lean on him more as a mentor to their rookie QBs.
Shedeur Sanders
He has had some “arm soreness” but is otherwise ready to play it seems like. He’s expected to start in their first preseason game, despite having received the fewest reps with the starters.
So with only Sanders and Flacco actually available, they added Tyler Huntley as insurance I guess. Still seems like one extremely crowded space. I don’t expect the Browns to have all of these QBs after roster cuts, though they’ll have at minimum 3 of them, since they are stuck with Watson, and I’m sure they’ll either keep Sanders, Gabriel, or both, and keep at least one available veteran guy as either backup or starter.
No matter how you look at it, it’s a huge mess. There’s a culture to maintain in Cleveland after all.
With preseason games starting in earnest this weekend, I’ve started a preseason thread.
