NFL 2026-2027: Week 5

And Washington, in field goal range, with no timeouts, inexplicably allows Daniels to run the ball and get tackled at the line of scrimmage. The clock expires before they can snap and spike the ball, so the game ends in a 27-27 tie.

Truly stupid ending to Commanders vs Giants. Giants fumble while in field goal range. Then the Commanders lost track of the clock when they were.

Well, NFC East definitely wins “most embarrassing division of the week” award.

The Bears went to Green Bay, just days after Mike Ditka’s passing. The Pack isn’t very good right now, and I had memories of how the Bears had played right after Walter Payton’s death, and stealing a win from the Packers.

Nope. The Bears were flat, couldn’t stop the Packers’ passing game, and turned the ball over five times. 31-7, Green Bay.

This made me laugh. And so true.

Wow, I thought he was setting up a spike or something but nope. Covered himself with glory on that one

In other news, WR Marvin Harrison Jr. has been traded from Arizona to Houston.

Harrison and a 7th-round pick for second- and sixth-round picks.

Chokery by all NFC East teams this week. Cowboys choking against winless Bucs, Giants and Commanders both in a comedy of errors leading to a 27-27 tie, and Eagles blowing a lead with mere seconds left against the Jags.

I hated everything about the 49ers Seahawks game this week except the final score (and Gracen Halton’s stat line).

There’s ugly wins, and then there’s… that.

Whole bunch of ugly wins this weekend (+ a particularly hideous tie), so it can just get in the queue.

It was really sooo much worse than that. Green Bay set a new record for passing yards in Green Bay. Over-and-over-and-over again long hail Mary passes were caught. Sometimes more than one in a row. The Bears barely got a running game going. The Bears starting QB was dismal and the coach left him in waaay too long. Add in sacks and Green Bay able to get a running game going (when the Bears had barely any till much later and even then not great).

Truly one of the most dismal and embarrassing performances by a pro football team I have ever seen (doubtless there are some worse but this has to be up there).

Slight correction: the most passing yards for a Packers QB, in a game against the Bears in Green Bay.

Weirdly Seattle lost and I didn’t feel so disappointed because it was a heck of a battle and a crazy game. Seattle also gave up their regular season home game to the 9ers and won a SB last year so this doesn’t feel like doom.

I think it shows how much respect there is for the 9ers that a close loss is acceptable.

Maybe it also helps that Seattle came out of the game pretty healthy. Drake Thomas had an ankle injury which sucks but it didn’t seem too bad since he was just listed as “questionable”.

That loss to Washington is what really sucked.

Ben Johnson stated that he wanted the Bears to break the NFL scoring record. For those keeping track at home:

The 2013 Broncos have that distinction at 606 points in 16 games (37.9 points per game).

The 2026 Bears now have 119 points through 5 games (23.8 points per game). If they want to match the 2013 Broncos, the Bears need to average 43.7 points per game in their remaining 12 games. Caleb Williams is going to have to play like a man possessed when his hamstring heals.

Big difference was that Baltimore had a timeout left so didn’t need to get out of bounds. Jacksonville had no timeouts left so would have had to complete a deep sideline pass and get out of bounds - much more difficult.

So I start watching the Lions game yesterday. Up to that point the Lions had a shaky 2 and 2 record, lucky to be at .500 with a defense that’s been playing terribly. And right away, the Cardinals march down the field for a touchdown on their first possession, while the Lions offense sputters with a couple 3 and outs. So I turn the TV off in disgust to have dinner and spend quality time with my wife.

Later I check the final- Lions 45, Cards 21. So clearly, if I want to salvage the Lions’ season, I have to stop watching any Lions games.

The sports logic checks out!

I watch most sports hours or days delayed. I also don’t follow sports news so the game is still a fresh experience to me whenever I get around to turning it on. Solves the “I’ll jinx 'em” problem real good.

My actual goal is to never have to sit through a commercial. The no-jinx feature is just a bonus.

My wife is a lifelong fan of the Chicago White Sox. She didn’t watch a single game this season, until this past Wednesday, when the Sox had won the first two games of the best-of-five divisional playoff series against the Cleveland Guardians, and would have advanced to the ALCS with a win, at home.

She watched the entire game with her mother; the Sox played poorly and lost, and then went on to lose the next two games, and the series. My wife might never watch a White Sox game again. :stuck_out_tongue:

If the Lions could play the Cardinals every week, they’d do great. The Cardinals are the punching bag of the NFC West.
