NFL 49ers vs Cardinals: No safety

This was one of the highlights I saw on Sportscenter. QB threw the ball away from the end zone. Grounding is a loss of down, but since the penalty was in the end zone, shouldn’t it also have been a safety? Did the refs blow it?

I don’t suppose you have a link to a video of this?

I’m looking at the play-by-play of that game on the NFL website. Early in the 4th quarter, on 3rd and 1 from their own 11, Kyler Murray was flagged for intentional grounding. The next play, a punt, was run from their own 1-yard line. So the refs must have ruled that Murray was not in the end zone when he threw the ball. Because the OP is correct, if he was in the end zone when he threw the ball, it would have been a safety.

I cannot find a video, but I’ll keep looking.

ETA: Here’s a video. He was just barely out of the end zone.

Ok, hard to see, but ‘released beyond the plane of the goal.’ Thanks.

It’s the other call which is the iffier one. The hold was arguably NOT in the end zone; however, the rusher would have sacked the QB in the end zone if (presumably) not hindered. Looking at the rulebook there doesn’t appear to be any official wiggle room there; the foul either occurred in or out of the end zone, and that is all you need to determine. The guard in question tho kept pursuing the pass rusher and kept pawing at him well into the end zone, so if the ref thought the foul did continue past the goal line, then there is an element of judgement there after all.
