I seen several mentions of Rex Ryan being a good coach. Why do people think he is any good? He’s 46-50 overall and led his team to winning seasons only twice (notably in his first 2 seasons - since then, bupkis). In fact, the team has gotten worse, not better, during his tenure. I know he’s a name and has a good football pedigree - and he might be a great defensive coordinator - but in my opinion he’s been an abject failure as a HC and I would never want him coaching my team.
That’s what happened:
I think the logic is that going 46-50 with those rosters is a master work. And to be fair, the Jets always seemed to over-achieve and win games they never should have.
If you read some of the quotes from yesterday’s press conference, it sounds like Accorsi has already advised them that they may well need to jump on a coach first, before they get the GM squared away.
I listened to the whole conference and didn’t get that impression. What did you hear?
I definitely heard a few questions from the media on the topic and they acknowledged that a scenario could present itself where this would be what they’d have to do, but they frequently repeated their preference for a traditional top-down structure where the GM reports to Ted and the Coach reports to the GM, which implies the GM hires him.
Can’t believe there hasn’t been any shedding of staff in DC yet.
The fact that he got to two AFC Championships with Mark Freaking Sanchez at QB is pretty masterful. As I said, he definitely needs an offensive coordinator - I don’t trust him to run an offense, nor pick the right players for one - but I still think he’s a good coach, especially on the defensive side (and I don’t think he’ll ever go back to being a coordinator, if he doesn’t get a HC job, he’ll go into the broadcast booth).
I’m getting really worried about the Raiders’ coaching search… I see the 49ers contacting guys like Dan Quinn, Todd Bowles (both intriguing coordinators), Rex Ryan, Mike Shanahan (proven head coaches when the right players/front office is in place), etc. Meanwhile the Raiders are contacting guys like Pat Shurmur and Eric Mangini. Ugh. I know the O.Co sucks and no one takes Mark Davis seriously, but is the job THAT undesirable?
Jim Haslett (the defensive coordinator) is gone.
Not seeing it. Overall defensive ranks for the Jets under Ryan’s tenure. from first year to last:
Yards: 5, 6, 15, 23, 21, 18
Points: 7, 8, 15, 26, 26, 26
The trend is clearly downhill. You can’t put that all at the heels of a QB or a GM. Ryan is supposed to be defensive guru but the numbers that I’ve seen don’t back it up. I also don’t give him full credit for his record the first season - he inherited a 9-7 team and came back the next year with a 9-7 team. How much of that was him and how much was leftover? It’s not like he got the 1-13 Lions or something.
I still think he’s all bun and no burger.
I just heard Doug Marrone of the Bills resigned.
He was 15-17 in 2 years. The press release said nothing of interest except that he was allowed to opt out after the team changed ownership.
The cynic in me is wondering with no other news or information. A little background, Ralph Wilson died early this year and was the sole owner of the Bills for 54 years. Terry Pegulia finalized the purchase midway through this last season.
Several years ago he bought the Buffalo Sabres hockey team where things had been stale and stats quo for ever. He let things stand pat until they were in last place.
Is this a lesson learned? New owner, new direction immediatly? Let Marrone o fall on the sword or is it Marrone running screaming?
Too early to tell.
ESPN is reporting that Marrone’s 2015 salary of $4 million is guaranteed even if he opts out, and won’t be subject to any sort of offset if he gets a new job. With terms like that, why not leave? Free $4 million!
Word is the Jets are interested in him.
While his first team posted the same record as the team he inherited, he did improve the point differential (which is a better indicator of a team’s real strength) by nearly double. Next year he went 11-5, but the point differential dipped a bunch (but still better than Magini’s last year).
I admit I don’t know enough about the Jets to say whether it was the GM or Rex (aside from knowing they let Revis get away) but they did fire their GM in 2012, as well. And sure, you can’t put all the defensive struggles on the offense, but it does cause some of it… when Sanchez/Tebow/McElroy/Geno is constantly going 3-and-out or giving away turnovers that cause short fields, it’s gonna tire out the defense and give up more points.
Yes, the news is saying the Bills will pay Marrone $4 million this year if he shows up for work or not. I need to remember that trick for my next job.
Rumors were flying that Bill Polian was going to come to the Bills as a consultant. He admitted to a local reporter that he had several conversations with the team owner but said no thanks.
Not a good sign.
Bill Polian has a lot to offer a franchise. He could easily convey the full extent of his professional knowledge in just a few words. “Draft Peyton Manning.”
Don’t forget the other half - “If that still isn’t enough, use your position on the Competition Committee to change the illegal contact rules and set off the biggest shift ever towards passing offense.” I mean, it’s not like the Pats haven’t benefited as well, but still.
The Marrone news surprised me until I heard about the $4m, too. I think he did more than well enough there being competitive with minimum QB play that he’ll get another NFL job either this year or next. However bad that Oakland loss looks.
Don’t forget about Polian that before Indy, he along with John Butler put together the Bills 4 consecutive SB run.
Saints announce they’re keeping Rob Ryan. This could get interesting if Rex takes the Falcons job.
There’s no one more overrated than Rob Ryan in the NFL. The Saints defense stunk this year. But , I can see why the Saints wouldn’t want him to bolt to the Falcons. Still, if Rob wants to join his brother , it could be a fun scenario to watch
I wish Marvin Lewis was on the coaching carousel.
Brian Schottenheimer is leaving the Rams to be the OC at the U of Georgia. Not sure that is a step up for him, but glad to get some new blood in the coaching staff. Schottenheimer’s offenses have been pretty predictable and he has had a hard time finding a way to utilize Tavon Austin or keep consistency with the receiving corps.
I am begging, Arthur Blank, begging. Don’t hire Rex Ryan. Please. He has proven he sucks, get someone’s coordinator don’t really care which. Just not some fricken retread.
I seriously do not understand this trope about Tavon Austin. He’s been in the league for two years now, and the Rams have given him every opportunity to succeed, and he doesn’t. It’s not because they don’t get him the ball, he had 69 targets his first year. It’s that he’s not a good NFL wide receiver. He doesn’t run good routes, he’s small, he doesn’t have good hands, and he doesn’t break tackles. He is just one in a long line of flashy, high risk players overdrafted by Jim Fisher led teams.
Of course I still don’t understand why Fisher is an NFL head coach, so there is that.
