NFL offseason 2018

If an NFL player murdered a random woman in cold blood, Dale would say she’s just a drama queen trying to take down someone famous.

Rae Carruth is innocent!

Nope, I’d want a fair trial. But I’d let the criminal justice system decide, I wouldn’t suspend him from the league if he’s found not guilty.

If he had a history of such allegations, the public really started to despise him, and it risked hurting the reputation of the league even further by taking no action, you bet I’d suspend him. If I’m the commissioner I’m running an entertainment business, not a government. I’ll do whatever I can do within the law to protect that business.

So Winston should get a fair trial, but you’re perfectly willing to characterize an allegation of sexual assault as “flirting”?

The NFL has had an ongoing problem with players being accused of assaults against women, and a perception that the league had gone easy on those players. Starting with the Ray Rice incident, the league changed its policies on suspension lengths, but in cases like Winston’s, it appears that the player can reduce the length of the suspension by issuing a statement of contrition (though, in Winston’s case, it was clearly carefully worded, and he never admitted doing what he was accused of).

Also, in this case, there was some level of trying to cover things up (he initially claimed that he had other people in the Uber car with him, but it’s become evident that it was just him and the Uber driver). This also wasn’t Winston’s first case of misbehavior: he was accused of rape while at Florida State (a case that was apparently not well-investigated by the local police nor his university, and he settled a civil case regarding it out of court). Also while he was at FSU, there was an incident of him screaming sexually explicit words in the middle of campus, which led to a short suspension (link has NSFW language, so it’s inside the spoiler):

Yeah, all that factored in and I think Winston got off easy. You can be suspended for longer if you tested positive for marijuana (as a second offense) despite it being increasingly legal and not a performance-enhancing drug.

They really need to amend that policy to allow for marijuana. They wouldn’t have to announce it or anything, just quietly stop testing for it.

Please get it right. In dale’s world, she would be an attention- seeking whore just looking for a payday.

Yes, preseason football often sucks, but the 49ers are going to stream their games for free online. Hopefully other teams will follow.

Let’s hope this gets expanded to be able to watch every team’s preseason games for free online, regardless if you’re in the local market.

Josh Gordon to miss start of training camp for a ‘health and treatment plan.’

I’ve seen this movie before.

“Gordon has missed 43 of the Browns’ past 48 games because of suspensions and has played in just 10 games since the 2014 season, including five when he returned late last season.”

I know it’s the Browns, who barely qualify as a professional football team, but how could any team continue to have this guy on the roster and keep paying a salary? Does he have blackmail info on someone in the front office?

(Actually in that organization I’d believe it.)

I hear that he has photographic evidence that two high-ranking members of the Browns’ front office are having an affair.

Other sources seem to say it’s not what you’d think. Time will tell.

Maybe. But if Josh Gordon told me it was raining, I’d leave the umbrella at home. And, I think that players should be able to smoke all the weed they want to. But just like at my job, there are silly rules that have to be obeyed.

He’s probably avoiding having his sobriety be the main storyline on Hard Knocks, which is probably just fine with the team.

Heh.

Yeah, and I read elsewhere that they had changed the rules on what say the teams had in what airs - now it’s only things that would “affect competitive balance” or something. So I’d guess a combo of wanting to lay low and probably feeling his anxiety (because he’s off the weed) and making sure he can control it.

Josh Gordon can miss some training camp, I don’t care. Like it or not, he requires special treatment. And he’s on the Browns’ roster because they don’t have any elite WRs (Jarvis Landry, meh) and when he plays, he’s actually really good.

Josh Gordon moved to the Did Not Report list. Browns GM doesn’t know when Gordon will return .
