NFL offseason 2018

Weak effort.

Yeah, I thought of that so I’ll be following this rumor after today.

That’s what I thought too.

Rugby players can keep their damn head up, why can’t football players? It’s not just the helmet, but the top of it. No more Shazier Spear. No more Night Night for Davante Adams. It’s Tackling 101 - See What You Hit. If proper tackling is the end of the NFL, we’re already pretty fucked in the head.

Patriots trade Brandin Cooks to the Rams in exchange for #23 pick in the draft. So that’s the Pats two top WRs from 2017 gone. Even with Edelman coming back, that’s…less than ideal.

Any draft crushes? Late round gems? Future busts you want no part of? Team needs?

I like LSU WR D.J. Chark.
Not sure how “late” he’ll go, but Logan Woodside will probably have a better career than most of the big four QBs.
Speaking of them, Josh Allen had bust stamped all over him.

For my 49ers, I see primary needs at EDGE, OG, WR, and CB. They probably want some insurance at ILB, too, and even a future OT. The order to best full those should be dictated by the draft class depth.

EDGE is not deep this year, so they better pick one in the 1st. Chubb is likely gone before #9, Landry seems like a great fit for them. If they trade back: Davenport, Okoronkwo, or maybe Sweat. No Arden Key, dude’s a walking red flag.

SS Eric Reid is visiting the Bengals. Yes please. Oh, he locked arms with Colin Kaepernick…OH NOES.

i recall Reggie Nelson, another accused malcontent 1st round pick being jettisoned from the Jags and in his time with the Bengals he blossomed into an excellent acquisition. I think the same can be done for Reid. Dude is a baller.

Can we please go ahead and hold the draft already? That would cut down the number of uninformed and useless mock drafts filling up website space.

NFL “news” expands to fill the available space. With the NCAA basketball tournament and the Masters done, but the NHL and NBA playoffs having not yet started, useless draft coverage has room to take over.

It’s like kudzu.

I haven’t really gone deep so it will be tough to get excited or pissed about the Bears mid-round selections this year. Though I’m sure I’ll binge in the week leading up to and during the draft and become resolute on a few dudes.

Right now my biggest internal struggle is figuring out if the Bears would be wise to grab Quentin Nelson at #8 if he’s available. On one hand, we have a need and Nelson seems to be universally considered a stud and perennial Pro Bowler. On the other, he’s a guard which is a somewhat low impact position for the top of the first round. Mocks have him going anywhere from #5 to the high teens, so ultimately it depends on how much you value guard play.

The Bears two most urgent needs are probably OLB/EDGE and OL, closely followed by CB and WR. Many mocks have the Bears going CB with Ward or Jackson, others have us going Ridley or James/Fitzpatrick all of whom are probably out of the question considering our roster right now. A stud OT would probably be ideal but there isn’t one out there in this range, with us moving on from Sitton, you have to think OG is a real possibility.

Ultimately the Bears are either a trade-down candidate or they go BPA, which I like as a strategy but on paper we’re good in the defensive backfield so that could be a conflict.

I go to the gym late morning/early afternoon. Most of the TVs are tuned to ESPN. The only thing their talking heads cover is what’s up with Lebron James and mock draft analysis. I expect ESPN to ignore the NHL since they don’t cover it. But there’s more going on that just the stupid NFL draft and especially people guessing about what might happen.

Well, Eric Reid left Cincinnati a few days ago without a contract. The ghost of Colin Kapernick strikes again. Apparently Mike Brown (The Redeemer) and/or Marvin Lewis scotched the deal after Reid had a physical and everything because, according to the NY Post:

*The former Pro Bowl safety had a visit with the Bengals on Monday. During the trip, he sat down with Mike Brown, when he was told the Cincinnati owner planned to prohibit players from kneeling, according to Pro Football Talk. Reid, who has said he is not planning to kneel during the national anthem anymore, was caught off-guard and wouldn’t make a commitment to his plans regarding kneeling.

After taking a physical, meeting with coaches and reviewing film, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis asked Reid if he wanted to clarify anything he said to ownership about kneeling, according to the report. He did not. And Reid, the first player to kneel with Kaepernick, has not been offered a contract.*

So the old guard is still clinging to this patriotic nonsense, even though from the same article, Marvin Lewis said:* But the Bengals seem to be taking a stand.

“We are about playing football,” Lewis told reporters at last month’s owners’ meetings. “[Players who] have other agendas, this is not the place to be. On Sunday for us and throughout the week in the building, it’s about football. That’s how I’ve approached it. Whatever happens from the league standpoint we will go along with, but that is what our guys know. And they handle that for me. I don’t have to have a voice. They understand what I am about, anything beyond that gets in the way of us doing what we want to do and that’s winning football games.”*

That’s all well and fucking great, and I get it…but your defensive coordinator wanted him, the fans all wanted him, he’s good, he’d be an upgrade…are the Bengals trying to win in 2018 or not?

Eric Reid himself said this: *Reid has known for some time that kneeling could jeopardize his employment. This was his first visit with a team in free agency.

“The notion that I can be a great signing for your team for cheap, not because of my skill set but because I’ve protested systemic oppression, is ludicrous. If you think is, then your mindset is part of the problem too,” he tweeted on March 15. “GMs aren’t the hold up broski. It’s ownership. People who know football know who can play. People who know me, know my character.”*

I frankly find the whole thing pretty ridiculous. Yes, there are lots of fans that are mad at guys like him for all the wrong reasons and cannot be convinced otherwise, but…that was a few seasons ago and the moment he gets his first pick-6, everyone will forget all about it. Mike Brown is “The Redeemer” after all. He drafted Odell Thurman when he shouldn’t have. Ditto Chris Henry, and hung onto that guy for far longer than he should have when even the head coach didn’t want him. We redeemed Adam “Pacman” Jones. We drafted Joe Mixon. WTF is up with the outrage over a non-violent, non-drug or alcohol related incident? I hate my team sometimes.

ETA: Oh yeah, link to relevant article, although there are many out there saying the same thing: Eric Reid’s Bengals visit took a turn when anthem was brought up

Dez Bryant released by the Cowboys. He’ll surely get picked up but perhaps all the pouting and temper tantrums have finally caught up to him.

Also might have something to do with the decline in his performance. He’s clearly lost a step; without the advantage of his full athletic gifts, he’s a fairly pedestrian receiver. He basically only runs 2-3 routes and cannot get open on his own, he doesn’t get a lot of yards after the catch, and at this point is just a jump-ball possession receiver.

There’s a lot of talk and mocks where the Giants don’t take a QB and take someone like Barkley. I’ve even seen people comment in other places that the Giants are in “win now” mode and can’t afford to take a QB to sit and learn. This makes no sense to me.

They’re a 3-13 team. There’s a reason they’re drafting #2 overall. What other 3-13 team gets talked about as being in win-now mode? Is it some sort of New York media bias?

Eli is 37. He’s never been amazing and he’s certainly not anything special at this stage in his career. He was even benched this year.

The Giants, while certainly not in “win now” mode, aren’t particularly likely to repeat as a top 2 pick. You may not be in position to draft a top QB prospect next year drafting in 8th or 10th or whatever.

Everyone seems to agree that there are at least 2 very good QB prospects this year.

It seems to me that if the Giants do anything other than draft a QB or get a big haul in a trade down it’ll be quite moronic. I have no idea why people seem to think they’re 50/50 at best for taking a QB.

There are 5 or 6 QB’s (Mayfield, Donald, Rosen, Allen, Jackson, maybe Rudolph) who are all spoken about as possible 1st round picks, and some other more developmental prospects (Lauletta, White, maybe Benkert and Barlett) later in the draft. And none of those 1st round guys are so much more amazing than the others. So if you can get a good enough haul, but still end up with one of those 5, it’s the thing to do.

Do you see the guy who is clearly better than the rest in that lineup of QBs? I like Mayfield and hate Allen, but I’m not confident at all that one of them is going to clearly outperform others. So if I can get Rudolph and a first round pick and a couple seconds instead of Donald or Rosen, I’m making that call every day and twice on Tuesday.

Equanimeous St. Brown, WR, Notre Dame is my top pick for best name in this draft pool. Not the best player, but an awesome name.

I remember the year Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was drafted. That was a fantastic name.

Mark Sanchez with a 4 game ped suspension, I assume he was taking injections in the butt!

No one will miss him…not much deterrence in suspending the backup to a backup for 4 games.
