NFL Offseason Staff changes

Please don’t take Josh McDaniels away from the Patriots.

Waiting for that Cowboys job to open up next year, I think.

Boy I don’t know - I can’t think of a poorer match-up. Cower doesn’t seem to fit in that organization at all.

No. He has said he’s going to take a couple weeks before he gets into looking.

Cowher, OTOH, has been saying for two years he did not plan on getting back into it before 2010, when his youngest is in college.

It’s being widely reported that ex-Lions HC will be hired by the Bears as their Defensive Line Coach. Lovie Smith, Defensive Coordinator Bob Babich and Rod Marinelli all are friends and share the same agent. Anytime a 0-16 head coach is available, you have to get him.

God damn this coaching staff sucks. Just one more guy who has absolutely no talent at managing a football game on Sunday and can’t make mid-game adjustments. Also, GM Jerry Angelo has somehow determined that Kyle Orton was the problem this season, and not the 21st ranked, highly paid, loud-mouthed defense or the dearth of talent at WR and lack of depth at RB. Give Orton a modest 3 year deal, make him comfortable and draft a QB with a strong arm to replace him 2 years from now.

I saw that one coming. There was talk the day after that Marinelli was headed to Chicago.

The Packers basically fired their entire defensive staff today, except the linebackers coach.

He said it’d have to be “the perfect situation” for him to come back this year, though. Whether that means the Jets job or an actual perfect situation is unclear.

BC threatening to fire Jagodzinski if he interviews for the Jets job. This seems like a fantasically stupid position to take for BC. I’m not sure that Jagodzinski is considered a leading candidate or even likely to get an offer so BC’s stance seems to be a no-win one. Why would anyone want to coach there in the future under that type of restriction.

I agree. Is that supposed to scare him?

Seems like a backhanded way of firing him without admitting to it. He’s basically gone no matter what now, if the guy has any self-respect, so maybe BC will be glad to be rid of him for some unknown reason. It’s possible that he’s a prima donna who’s blatantly leveraging BC for more money or using them as a stepping stone at the cost of the program and their recruiting credibility.

But, if none of that’s the case then BC just shot themselves in the foot in epic fashion. If they value the guy this is about the least likely way to keep him and keep him happy.

I agree, but like you alluded to, maybe the street runs both ways. Maybe Jagodzinski has been getting antsy and his superiors know it.

Slightly tangential: would your employer threaten to fire you if you were openly looking/interviewing for a job?

Only if Jason Garrett is gone by then. He’s the fair-haired boy there.
Jags is an NFL guy, and it’s no surprise he wants to go back there with his ticket punched. BC should have realized that when they hired him instead of a career college guy. But they may well just be trying to limit the recruiting damage that a coaching change at this time would cause - any protraction in a period of uncertainty means a lost year. The ultimatum does make the pain last only a few days at most, and besides, they already have the proven Steve Logan ready to take over immediately.

Not in most jobs, as long as one’s job performance is not affected. But in football recruiting, it matters a lot, and that’s what time of year it is. A school is handicapped in getting the best athletes if they doubt the coach talking to them is going to be around, for one thing. For another, recruiting is an every-waking-moment effort, and any distractions inevitably hurt the program.

Two of the leading candidates for the Browns jobs for some reason are Mangini and Kokonis. So, to replace the New England 2004 defensive coordinator terrible head coach they might get the New England 2005 defensive coordinator mediocre head coach. To replace 2004’s Baltimore Director of Personel Phil Savage, they’ll replace him with 2005-2008 director of personal Kokonis. Bizarre.

Oh, I understand why the program did that, but I was wondering if your employer would do the same.

Anybody want Gruden for two first-round picks?

Didn’t think so. God, what was Rich McKay thinking?

I understand the perspective, but the fact that Head Coaches bounce back and forth from college to the NFL and from job to job is a fact of life. Players, colleges and franchises all know this and it’s part of the business that everyone accepts. BC has to know that taking this publicly hostile stance will do nothing to change this fact of football life. All it does is paint them negatively which I would argue does more to hurt their credibility with recruiting and hiring than having their hot coach plucked for a plum NFL HC job. The latter means they did a great job of picking the guy and all signs indicate that they could again. The former means that they have institutional drama and conflict that might sabotage any future dealings.

Yeah, losing a HC hurts recruiting, but acting like a spiteful spurned lover and committing PR suicide hurts more.

He was thinking, “I really want to win the Super Bowl.”

He did, too.

Sure, but we won our Super Bowl on the strength of a defense that Gruden had absolutely nothing to do with. The offense was no more effective than the year before:

312.6 yards/game (24th) and 21.6 points/game (18th) in 2002; 293.4 yards/game (24th) and 20.2 points/game (15th) in 2001.

The difference in scoring (1.4 points/game) was almost entirely due to the fact that the defense scored three times off interceptions/fumbles in 2002, and didn’t score at all in 2001 (a difference of 1.3 points/game). The only real improvement in the offense was Brad Johnson cutting down on the interceptions, which wasn’t particularly difficult since the team was hardly ever forced to throw.

Since the Super Bowl year, we’ve had a couple of division titles, invariably followed by first-round losses in the playoffs.

Am I glad we got Gruden? Sure. Do I think he’s a good coach? Not really. All his farting around with veteran quarterbacks has ensured constant mediocrity at the position, which has in turn assured constantly mediocre offenses. The Chris Simms affair wasn’t really his fault, but then Simms was never likely to become a star anyway. On the other hand, Luke McCown made four starts last year in relief of Garcia, played brilliantly, and hasn’t been heard from since. Instead we got Brian Griese.

I do hold out hope that The Josh Johnson Project will result in a long-term solution at quarterback- but I’m not holding my breath.
