Ford will make the picks,I think he might go after Kobe Bryant.
Er… you just fired the previous coach last week.
The draft is the last weekend of April, the 25th and 26th.
They can just go read off the AP All-America list, as usual.
*What *PR suicide? I don’t see how BC loses anything imagewise, either to the athletes it’s recruiting or to the alumni and ticketholders. Jags hasn’t been in Boston long enough, only 2 years, to have his own base of support anywhere. As soon as the next guy is in place, Jags will be forgotten.
In gonzomax’s defense, shouldn’t Marinelli have been shot long before that?
Look how long it took to get rid of Millen, fer pete’s sake.
Yes, but now FOX has a case of Teh Millen.
It will lose a bit of lustre to potential head coaching candidates, but fuck that - good on BC for actually holding a coach to his contract.
BC just did it. Maybe it started as a bluff, but another rule is that you never make a bluff you’re not willing to follow through on.
Hope it was worth it to ya, Jags.
Jagowhatever didn’t only interview with the Jets. I’ve read he put out feelers and made contact with a number of other pro teams. He was only a college coach for two years and was in the NFL for years before that, and if so, I’d say it was pretty clear he was just looking for a chance to jump back. So I say good move for BC.
I just heard on the radio that Mangini was hired by the Browns.
Confirmed. I just read it on espn.com.
Mangini reported to be hired as Browns coach. LINK
Apparently the Browns are also looking to talk to Eagles GM Tom Heckert. LINK
So… uh… bad?
Given the earlier discussion about his overaggressive mistakes, at least I’ll get to see a new kind of mistake.
He sounds like he creates a shitty coaching environment, very cloak and dagger, secretive, etc. Bah.
Rumor is that Mangini and Kokonis come as a combo - the owner is placing a very high value on a GM/HC team that can get along. There was talk about a Heckert/Spagnuolo package, which sounds more appealing.
Unlikely that Pioli is going to want to work with Mangini.
So what can you guys tell me about Mangini?
WHEW! Rob Ryan as DC, not Crennel. If it was Crennel … I don’t know what my reaction would’ve been … but it would not have been good. I would’ve taken the prostitute from a Tijuana donkey show as DC over Crennel.
I still don’t like this whole thing. First - you shouldn’t be hiring a HC before GM. Hire a GM, and let him pick the HC. I guess since there has been so much about hiring a team, they may already have known and agreed on the GM/HC team.
Still… bah. Do Spagnuolo or Jim Schwartz or Josh McDaniels really not have clearly more upside than Mangini? Or if you’re insisting on an experienced coach, Schottenheimer was available and enthusiastic.
I just can’t find myself too impressed by Mangini and most of the behind the scenes stuff with him sounds bad.
I get why they wanted Mangini. He’s the first coach since they got back in the league to have any head coaching experience. Plus I think the Jets’ collapse was due more to relying on Brett Favre than anything Mangini did.
My issue with Pioli is that you don’t know exactly how much of the decision making Belichick actually does, so there’s no way of knowing if Pioli can step up and be the top dog in the front office.
ETA: Where are you hearing about Ryan?
Now that’s strange. There was a pinned thread on theobr.com declaring Rob Ryan as DC. But now it’s removed. This might be the first time I’ve seen them get something wrong. Wonder what that’s all about.
I was more enthusiastic about Ryan than Mangini.
Edit: They weren’t wrong, just goofed up a thread merge.
“For the position of defensive coordinator, sources told Smith that Mangini will bring aboard Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, whose contract with Oakland also is up”
That’s a good get. Ryan had Oakland’s D playing really well, and he wasn’t getting any help from the offense.
Wish the Bears were in the market for a new DC…and OC…and HC…and GM…
Rats. I wanted Ryan.
Cleveland has some talent. Let’s see if they’ll play like it.
Our motto will always and forever be “wait 'til next year.”
