NFL Offseason Thread: Combine & Free Agency Version

What the fuck sirs!

Relax Browns fans, Delhomme only threw 18 picks last season. He didn’t even lead the league. Shhh, no no, hush. And it was only three years ago that he had a 111.8 QB rating. Shh, I said. Don’t argue. It’s fine.

I think the prices the Eagles have set for their QBs are understandable. Omni’s ludicrously uninformed opinion of McNabb aside, I find it hard to believe he isn’t worth a 1st. 33 isn’t old and McNabb is coming off probably the best three year stretch in his career (a three year period that was mostly injury-free too), so he’s clearly not yet slowing down. Kolb isn’t worth a 1st, but if you ask for a 2nd you have basically broken even with him without ever giving him a chance and seeing what he could actually do. If you aren’t going to give him a shot on the field, you should at least gain something for the investment, even if it is just a round’s profit.

I wouldn’t pay those prices were I running a team, but I understand setting them. Maybe if a playoff team was a steady QB away from a Super Bowl run, I’d pay it, but only then and only because the pick would be of a lower spot in the first anyway. A team like the 2009 Vikings, for example. A team that would have been in the Super Bowl had they had a QB like McNabb who is among the very best of all time in not throwing stupid picks, and almost certainly wouldn’t have forced a gunslinger pass across his body and across the field on the final drive.

Tremendous Upside Potential!

I’d be angry at you guys if you didn’t make me chuckle so much!

Truth be told, Cutler, right now = Matthew Stafford. I understand that quarterback is the toughest position on the field to fill, but having one good quarterback in all the years of the team’s existence?

I fucking hate football.

Tomlinson signs with the Jets, reportedly for a two-year deal. Not a bad signing for the Jets, IMO. Shonn Greene is unproven as a full-time starter, and now he can learn from one of the best ever.

And in other news, Browns trade Brady Quinn to the Broncos:

No news on what round the 2011 pick is. So now it looks like the Browns will decide between Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme for their starting QB. Can’t say I’d be thrilled about that if I were a Browns fan.

Brady cost the Browns their first round pick in 2008, a 2nd rounder in 2007, and the net result was a fullback and a demoralized Jake Delhomme. Awesome. Not that I’m enraged by the Delhomme signing. He’s just a placeholder until they can figure out what to do at QB long term, but this whole Quinn business has been disappointing.

They also traded Kamerion Wimbley to the Raiders, which I did not see coming.

Ugh. I’ve not been high on Wimbley since his rookie year, he’s a 1 move pass rusher (who admittedly is really good at that one move) but last year he was really improving on his weaknesses and was shaping up to be a pretty decent starter. I wonder what they got for him. The raiders have been eyeing Wimbley for a while now, and they’re bad at making trades, so I certainly hope we ripped them off… I have no idea what sort of OLB depth we’re going to have. Fujita isn’t gonna play OLB in the 3-4 I’d imagine.

Quinn, eh. I don’t know what they did to him, but started well and got worse with every snap. Rumor was that he lost his throwing motion because he was so concerned like looking like a buff model that he actually overdeveloped his throwing muscles and limited flexibility.

Edit: Early reports are that Wimbley was traded for a third. I’d rather keep him for that, unless he’s privately indicated an unwillingness to re-sign here. I mean, I guess this is the draft to stockpile picks for, since everyone who can declare will be doing so in order to get some of that delicious cap free money, but I think we’ve already got 11 or 12 picks, this is getting a bit nuts.

Dude. Our teams are REALLY bad. Stockpile as many picks as you can, trade assets if you know you can’t keep them while you can get as much return on the investment, and rebuild.

Dude, the Lions are worse off than the Browns. The Browns signed Josh Cribbs…

I don’t even want to get into a fight about what team is better or worse. They’re both horrendous.

The Lions have been historically bad the last two years, that much I know.

Brady Quinn gets traded to Denver for…a FB, essentially?

LMAO.

Its like he’s still in that green room, waiting to be drafted…

Delhomme is apparently getting $7 Million for thsi season. Doesn’t sound like backup money to me… Sure hope the Browns’ offensive players practice their tackling skills… Along with the money he’s getting not to play for the Panthers, he’s got to be one of the top paid players next season. Astonishing.

Shoot, the Browns offensive players are already the best tackling unit in the NFL after having dealt with DA and Quinn already.

They are ready to embrace the awesomeness that is Del-homie.

Seriously though, this could turn out well for them. Delhomme is not too far removed from being considered a very good QB, and they do have a lot of picks and presumably Holmgren knows what he’s doing. They’ll get better.

All bets are off for next season though if Delhomme has anything resembling his season last year.

This is far, far from proven. The Seahawks were horrible until after Holmgren was replaced in his GM capacity. Perhaps now that he can focus on those duties alone he might be able to figure it out.

Well, you’re right about that but the guy does know football. Its got to be tough wearing both the head coach and GM hats at the same time.

Man, the Jets are stupid. They basically paid LDT the same money that it would have cost to keep Thomas Jones and TJ is a much better football player than LDT right now. Baffling.

That’s not nearly as dumb as a team deciding to pay Jake Delhomme, he of the noodle arm and 5 INT games, 7 fucking million dollars to potentially not play QB. Anyone who thinks Delhomme has anything left clearly hasn’t watched him try and play the last 2 seasons, he was far and away the worst starting QB in the league last year not named JaMarcus.

Aaaaaand, filling the NFL’s role of “team with obligatory ugly-as-sin alternative jersey” this coming season is…

The Green Bay Packers!

That’s in the running for ugliest so far. Is that blue and gold or purple and gold? Please, please be purple and gold…

No, blue and gold. It’s a throwback to this uniform, except the number patch on the front is now blown up to 3rd-rate-superhero-costume proportions (it must have gotten a dose of 1950s radiation).
