NFL Offseason Thread: Combine & Free Agency Version

That sounds clever on paper, but keep in mind that most local sportswriters are fucking morons.

When you have a point you have a point.

Santonio Holmes has been traded to the Jets…

For a fifth rounder? Well, that’s bad for the Steelers, so I’m happy. Surely they could’ve gotten more than that?

Now they have an 82 year old Hines Ward and some one year wonder 3rd receiver… and gluehands Limas Sweed.

The word is that Santonio is going to be suspended for 4 games this year for violating the substance abuse policy, plus this assault thing that’s hanging over him. I think the Rooneys simply had enough and dealt him away. This is not something new, they have a history of dealing guys like this. A 5th-round pick is a hell of a lot better than the outright release he would have gotten otherwise.

Didn’t realize this was the final year of his contract, so it’s looking somewhat more reasonable.

Steeler board meltdown thread.

It’s difficult to argue that the Jets didn’t get a huge bargain here, but with Cotchery, Edwards, Clowney and Brad Smith on the roster I’m not seeing the need. Does this mean the Jets are going to move one of those other guys? There’s no way they all end up on the roster in week 1.

Barring salary cap issues next year, I don’t see why they wouldn’t have all those guys in the roster. Seems like a pretty good lineup.

They could of course, but teams generally aren’t going to have players of that caliber riding the pine. They are too well paid and valuable for that.

Yeah. I could hear the ticking and tocking on that time bomb. At least they got a fifth round pick. All the whinging on the Steeler message board is comical; the sky is always falling. Anyone following Santonio on Twitter saw this coming from miles away even if he didn’t. I think (hope) that they’re trying to send a message to Roethlisberger as well.

Well, as they say, they’re a team that’s a notch above the NFL when it comes to holding players accountable, so I’m sure we can quickly expect James Harrison to be traded for a 4th in 2013 and Roethlisberger may even garner a 2012 3rd.

Edit: Just letting him walk at the end of the year would probably give better than a 5th round pick as a compensatory pick.

James Harrison never repeated his behavior and Ben has never been charged. If the suspension rumors are true this is at least his third strike, and the assault thing, while still looking like a shakedown to me, might not have seemed so to the Rooneys.

It’s kinda funny how you guys are cackling with such glee this offseason, especially you, SenorBeef.Ben might have been guilty of bad judgment in hanging out at bars, but at least he never got whacked at a TSA security checkpoint with a locked-and-loaded 1911 in his carry-on. There’s something very Bengal-ish about that.

If a man can’t take a 1911 on his carry on luggage onto a plane, what has this country come to? BUNCH OF PUSSIES!

I’m not really cackling. I only find it funny because the Steelers gloat about how they don’t tolerate bullshit, and then a bunch of their players do bullshit and they’re forced to be selective about their punishments. FWIW, I don’t think the Steelers are unusually bad character or tolerate bullshit - they’re in the better half of the league at least - but I do love pointing out how they claim to hold themselves to a higher standard.

I’m not seeing Clowney and Smith as anything but easily replaceable roster filler. Clowney is more a returner and we’re now into season 4 of the great Brad Smith experiment and he still hasn’t really developed. Sure there is potential, but Holmes is clearly makes their WR corp better.

And I love that Steeler thread. Comedy gold.

Holmes had a bunch of shit on his Twitter feed about dope and telling a fan he wished he was dead or something stupid like that. They’ll miss his skill but he was on his way out anyhow. With Ward’s gimpy knees I think it means WR becomes more of a draft priority for them than people suspected.

Dez Bryant a Steeler?

They worked him out. Last week I thought it was a crazy thought. Now? Not so much…

Kinda-sorta-not-really.

Alex Smith is, for once, no longer a work in progress. He’s got the same offensive coordinator as last season, so during recent OTAs, he was already working on timing with receivers, instead of learning how to line up in the huddle. Smith has to really know the system and understand it fully before he can function properly, now he has the chance to do it, including quality targets and hopefully improved O-line play.
Sure, this is his last chance, but he should do well this season. Smith has improved every year he’s had significant playing time, and had pretty good numbers last season.

Davis Carr was brought in as a backup with the promise that, with exceptional play, he could challenge for the starting spot if Smith falters. The reason for replacing Shaun Hill with Carr is Hill’s style and arm strength meant a big change in playcalling if Smith went down.

The big deal to a certain group of 49er fans is Nate Davis. Davis was thought to be a 1st to 2nd round pick before word of his learning disability got around. The 49ers picked him in the 5th. He looked impressive in the pre-season last year, and some people think he’s the bees knees. He’s got the arm, he’s got the instincts, and he’s got the leadership presence. If we drafted Clausen in the first, it would probably mean casting aside Davis.

I’m conflicted because:

  1. I’m not as sold on Davis as others.
  2. Clausen could mean quality and stability at QB for many years, especially if he could hold a clipboard for a few years (Smith is on the last year of his contract, and Carr is signed for two years).
  3. But so could Davis, for a lot less money during his development.
  4. That pick could be used on a tackle or DB instead, either of which would help fill a need right away.
  5. Smith could end up a top 10 QB next year, making the question moot.
  6. When did I get as long-winded as Omni?
  7. Go Sharks!

Wasn’t Hill the starter at one point during a stretch last season, or was that the year before that? For some reason I thought the QB situation out there was still unsettled. Thanks for ‘splainin’.

Hill was the starter for the latter part of 2008 and the beginning of 2009, but he couldn’t keep the wins coming. Still, he’s the only post-Jeff-Garcia QB with the 49ers to have a winning record.
