5:30 PT: Updating earlier stories, the Houston Chronicle reports the Baltimore Ravens are set to announce later Thursday former NFL LB Mike Singletary has accepted a three-year contract as linebackers coach for the Ravens. Singletary had talked to Chicago Bears coach Dick Jauron twice about coaching in Chicago, but Jauron did not want to replace his current LBs coach, Gary Moeller, according to Bears spokesperson Scott Hagel.

Ray Lewis - future HOFer, baddest of all bad ass LBers, mean streak + Mike Singletary - nuff’ said, as your LB coach. What coaching does the Ray Lewis need? Any other field knowledge that he soaks up from this legend will be bonus points.

Emmitt basically said that he would be willing to take a pay cut and back-up role with the cowboys, as long as he would get a fair shot at competing for the starting job. And he said that his successor would have to be competent enough to fill the starting role for him to stay, if they give it to a “body” then he would not be inclined to stay.

Emmitt was also asked if Troy Hambrick would be capable of filling the starting role, Emmitt flat out said “not right now.”

Emmitt was being nice. Hambrick isn’t good enough to start anywhere, even the Bengals.

I was listening to Emmit on the Jim Rome show today… it sounds bad for his chances of returning to Dallas… as of today, anyway. He pretty much said out-right (after being led there by Rome, of course) that he was NOT going to be a backup to Hambrick… and said that he wouldn’t even “compete” for the job. Basically the impression that he gave was that he should be the starter based on what he has done for the Cowboys in the past, and that it was almost an insult to ask him to compete for a job he feels he has earned.

Note for the record that I am just reporting what I heard from Emmit, not what I feel. In my personal opinion everybody should compete for the starting job every year, and yesterday’s water won’t grind any corn… There is a time and a place for loyalty… but you gotta have the best guy on the field that you can possibly put out there. Having said that I’d probably STILL start Emmit over Hambrick… but then I’m a Raider fan and could really care less who plays in Dallas.
