NFL Training camps and preseason

Tony Kornheiser and Mike Wilbon sure did. They killed this typo as a humiliation, and combined with the whole “Natinals” fiasco really makes the Washington teams look like buffoons.

I agree with you fully. I think most NFL coaches are uncreative, and in a way, don’t want to stand out. Pulling out all your starters is just How It’s Done. No one wants to rock the boat. No one wants an idiot results-oriented fanbase saying “He got hurt in the 4th quarter! fire the coach!”.

Playing your developmental 3rd QB in the second half can make sense. But when your starters desperately need the playing time and you have a vet backup, I’d leave my guys in there for a lot longer.

(former QB) Bernie Kosar does the color commentary for the Browns preseason games. He’s a terrible broadcaster in the sense that he doesn’t have a good voice, he stammers and slurs, and general has no presentation - but the actual knowledge is better than any color commentator I’ve ever heard. It’s way more interesting than listening to a guy who graduated broadcast school saying “They need to run the ball, because when you run the ball you advance the ball by running it!”

He’ll regularly spot stuff that you’d expect a coach to see - “this corner keeps cheating inside, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they set up a double move post corner to exploit that” and then 2 plays later they do. That sort of stuff.

From a chat room I’m in: “how is it that Aaron Rodgers can walk backwards faster than our linebackers can run forwards?” - haha, so true.

So… my team sucks.

:frowning:

Nah. They’re just playing one of the greatest teams in the NFL, the Packers.

Sorry, I can’t even type that with a straight face. Yes, your team sucks. But it is only preseason. And the Packer’s O Line had 5 penalties in the first half alone, so it’s not all peaches and cream for us either. It’s going to be a fun season.

And seconds after I post that, Flynn throws a pick. Damn you David Veikune!! (I wanted the pack to draft him)

Look on the bright side, you have more to complain about, which is better than always saying nothing needs to change.

Anybody know when the first round of personnel cuts have to be made?

I had no idea the Packers had a guy named Frischknecht on the team. He’s now my favorite player based only on his name.

Haha, Kosar just said (paraphrasing) “there’s not really any positives the Browns have to take away from this game, except maybe that when they play Green Bay again in the regular season Green Bay will take them for granted.”

I have to rely on the internets, so I miss Kosar. He sounds like a winner. Sure he’s not Wayne Larrivee, but he sounds good.

By the way, take away the multitude of penalties and the Packers’ running game looks good. Of course it is just the Browns, so it’s hard to tell.

Larrivee’s no Jim Irwin. Larrivee was the hated voice of the hated Bears in my youth. Still hard to get my mind around him being The Voice of the Packers.

Good night for the Pack (other than too many penalties, no real complaints) but Mason Crosby can’t be just barely missing those 60+ yard field goals come September.

The Field Pass audio quality is stinking lousy…hopefully it has first game issues.

Of interest only to the most devoted fans:

Tyrell Sutton, an UDFA, is making it hard to cut him. Unfortunately for him, everybody on the roster ahead of him are too.

Pity kneels.

Irwin and McGee were easily my favorite broadcast team of all time. I do really like Larrivee though. Maybe it was those misspent years in Chicago, but he’s insightful and not a homer; he calls them likes he sees them. I like that.

Until next week, my mantra is “It was only the Browns. It was only the Browns.” Crosby has had a rough training camp, I was hoping for a strong showing, but I am concerned.

I’ve always wondered about subscribing, but I just can’t pull the trigger.

I’m jealous. I have to wait another two days.

Though Mark Sanchez looked pretty sweet last night.

For a relocated Cheesehead here in Cowboys country in South Texas, it’s either Field Pass, a satellite dish and a Sunday Ticket package, or spend my Sunday afternoons dealing with drunk idiots at sport bars if I want to follow the Pack. You get a discount if you buy Field Pass before the regular season starts. And they finally moved away from using Real Audio so its better than it used to be (other than tonight’s fuzzy audio quality, hopefully it isn’t a trend).

It must be nice to have two teams (and not be a frontrunning bastard). What are the odds that they’ll both suck for a decade straight?

I can’t find myself rooting for another team - not even having a pet NFC team, unfortunately. So the best I can do is start rooting for the teams I hate most to fail. And considering they made the AFC championship last year, it was not a good football season for me.

Gah, that 2005 (?) Jets team that Mangini took to the playoffs was crap, weren’t they? I hope he can work some magic with this crap too.

You mean like the 90s? heh. One nifty stat is that in the 40+ years the Jets have existed, there have only been like 4 or 5 times when the Jets and Giants both made the playoffs in the same year. And two of those have been this decade. So it has worked out nicely that pretty much in any given year when one is good, the other will suck so as not to steal the good team’s thunder.

Note that I hated the Jets until Parcells became their head coach, and have been a secondary fan ever since. I even had a soft spot for the Cowboys when Parcells went there, as crazy as it sounds. I worship at the altar of Parcells. (Go Dolphins!) Because the Jets are local it was a natural fit to stay secondary fans of them. While I’ll DVR and pore over the Giants preseason games, last night I watched two drives (one for Clemens and one for Sanchez) before tuning out.

  1. That was all Pennington, much like the Dolphins last year. Death of a thousand dinks and dunks will get you pretty far in the NFL. Unlike 2004 under Herm Edwards when the Jets were actually good. That postseason still pisses me off; they would have knocked Pittsburgh out in back to back playoff overtime games if their stupid kicker could make a fucking field goal.

moves over and pats seat for SenorBeef on the Bengals bandwagon
