In other news, a third OC was fired before the start of the season. I’m not sure I remember this happening even once, and now it’s 3 in the span of about a week and who knows whats gonna happen in Oakland.
Five days, actually. The first (Chiefs, I think) happened Monday, the third (Bills) happened Friday.
Who is the front-runner of the Bears’ ragged group of backup RBs?
I’m sure Adrian Peterson will be the backup for Forte and get those 3 or 4 snaps a game when Forte needs a rest but they want to remain in a traditional offense. But, Garrett Wolfe will be listed as #2 on the depth chart and will be used more often than Peterson, but those plays will be change of pace plays and maybe some screens.
Wolfe is much too small, he’s basically a slower Darren Sproles, to be the “backup” to Forte. Their running styles are completely different and there a lot of the Bears playbook that Wolfe simply can’t run. Of course Wolfe can do things that are unique due to his elusiveness so he’ll get on the field.
Long story short, if Forte gets hurt I expect AP to go from 2 or 3 rushes to 20 and Wolfe to go from 10 or 12 touches to 20 touches. So…we’re screwed.
Are there any hard luck RBs out there that have had outstanding camps but are going to be cut anyways doe to a crowded backfield? Some 6th or 7th round picks that showed flashes and are heading to practice squads?
The Giants continue to find diamonds at the RB position. I see Ware as the clear #3, leaving Allen Patrick out of the race. Patrick looks like another Ryan Grant / Derrick Ward type find.
I’m kinda hoping Patrick makes the practice squad, but frankly don’t see much point since even next year the Giants should be set with the return of Andre Brown.
I’m sure the Bears are far too loyal to dump AP for a guy out of another camp, even though they should. AP is a stud Special Teamer and solid guy but he shouldn’t be the fall back plan. What they should do is dump Josh Bullocks (or Trumaine McBride) from the Secondary and add a 4th RB like Patrick.
I should point out that equal credit for finding these guys should go to the Jets, who seem to be a bit of a farm system for the Giants. Both Derrick Ward and Danny Ware were signed off the Jets practice squad. (In different years, of course.)
I don’t remember the name of the current low man on the Jets RB totem pole, but I seem to recall him looking very good. That’s probably a better test; it’s hard to separate Giants RB performance from the OL.
Isaac Redman, who was cut by the Steelers, showed some flashes in preseason.
Some highlights so far on Cut Day:
A lot of players who you (and I) have never heard of and will never hear of again were cut.
Packers trade their backup LT Tony Moll (sucks) to the Ravens for Derrick Martin (who?) a DB. With the injuries in their secondary (They had to use a WR as a CB late in Friday’s game), they needed a healthy body.
Devin Hester ver. AFC, errr I mean Yamon Figurs has been cut by the Ravens.
Deltha O’Neal cut by the Texans (which surprised me because of Dunta Robinson’s holdout). Ravens will be looking for some WR’s.
Dominic Rhodes was cut by the Colts… errr. Raiders … ummmm… the Bills.
David Tyree was, indeed cut.
Colt Brennan goes on IR, but it looks like Chase Daniel got cut too. Maybe practice squad if he passes waivers.
Joey Harrington cut by the Saints. And the Lions too. They are still pissed and wanted another chance to cut him.
To no one’s surprise, there is Booty available today.
Apparently Rex Grossman is NOT cut by the Texans. His revival is only a Schaub knee away.
More as it comes in.
NNNOOOOOOoOOo!!!
The Packers announced their cuts, and cut my guy Jamon Meredith. After trading Tony Moll their backup LT, they now have one true LT on the roster, Chad Clifton. I’m scared if he goes down.
:shakes head:
I hope their planning on signing him to the practice squad.
More importantly to everybody but me, the Packers also released their second round pick from last year, QB Brian Brohm. I think he’ll get some interest. They also cut both Kregg Lumpkin and free agent preseason stud Tyrell Sutton. And, in a surprise, they cut Anthony Smith, a safety with experience in the 3-4 who was looking good and challenging for a starting gig. They also put Justin Harrell, their #1 draft pick from 2007, on IR. Again. Stupidest draft pick of TTs career.
Jeff Garcia cut by Oakland. He must be better than 30 backups. But he still wants to start.
He was too much a threat to JaMarcus Russell (and thus Al Davis).
Ooo, I very much would be interested seeing him in a Bears uniform. And considering his Indy ties Lovie might actually consider it. I like it. Not a game changer but I think a much better option than AP and I think we can find a way to carry 4 RBs on this roster.
The Sun Times is reporting:
Kevin Jones is done for the year and maybe the career. Tillman is a crucial piece and I’m hoping the delay in getting him back was just a tactical move to rest him and allow them an extra look at a guy in camp. Melton looked outstanding all camp and will probably be replacing Adewale next year, this “injury” is minor and they are basically redshirting the guy. I have never heard of Dahna Deleston before.
Here’s the official Bears cuts:
Several of these guys the Bears are desperately hoping pass waivers so they can stash them on the practice squad. Some were even held out of the 4th preseason game to prevent them being noticed.
Basenez played well and will probably find a way to the practice squad. I hoped Illini Jason Davis sticks with the practice squad but I think he’ll end up elsewhere and Ta’ufo,ou will be the guy they keep. I was never particularly impressed with McKie so whoever they keep might be valuable on day, I liked the potential in both. I like Davis especially because he has running skills and could be a Le’Ron McClain type.
There’s lots of teeth gnashing about Rideau being lost but the guy has had all the opportunity in the world and has done nothing with it. Perhaps he’ll always be Mr. August. I bet he gets consideration for another teams starting roster though.
I’m a little surprised Rod Hood was let go, he wasn’t great in the final preseason game but I think he had more upside than a few of the DBs the kept. McBride really doesn’t belong on an NFL team nor does Bullocks. If there are any more roster moves in the upcoming days from other teams scraps I suspect they’ll be gone.
Everyone really has their fingers crossed that Malast and Turenne will clear waivers and make it to the practice squad. They looked really outstanding.
Buccaneers trade Luke McCown to the Jaguars. Boo.
The Lions got first crack at the waver lists. They intend to exercise that right. They will announce the 53 man roster today, but have already said it will change in a few days.
The 49ers, despite saying they want to run 60% of the time, cut Kory Sheets and keep only 4 backs combined (RB and FB). Along with that they’re keeping only two TEs and have 6:eek: wideouts, not counting Crabtree (he doesn’t count towards the 53 until he signs).
Quite strange, I think. The upside is keeping 8 OL, 7 DL, and 9 LB.
In other news, WR Michael Spurlock made the team, and I’ll be thinking of Morgan Spurlock every time Michael is on the field.
Patriots trade DL Richard Seymour to Raiders for 2011 1st round pick. I’m not happy with this move at all, pending some other shoe dropping about other moves the Pats make with the pick. Seymour is a perennial pro-bowler and, more importantly, a defensive leader on team that already lost leaders Rodney Harrison and Tedy Bruschi. Sure, he’s 30 years old now and has had some injury issues, but it still leaves a GAPING hole, IMO.
Here’s the rest of the Pats defensive line: Ty Warren, Vince Wilfork, Jarvis Green, Ron Brace, Myron Pryor, Mike Wright, Derrick Burgess (hybrid DE/LB). Green is better than most think, but he’s no Seymour. I’m not seeing anyone here who can step into his shoes. This reeks of a “rebuilding” team move, and that ain’t the Pats.
But Bellicheat needs that first round draft pick so he can trade down over and over and end up with 3 3rd round picks and 2,325 4-7th round picks, and in the process having “draft experts” fellating his every move.
Well, that’s certainly . . . unexpected. Does anyone have the low-down on the Pats’ cap/contract situation? For instance, I know Wilfork is in the last year of his deal, and if it comes down to being able to keep just one of the two, then Wilfork + a likely high 1st Rounder is probably better than just Seymour. It sure seems like a strange move for one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl. Still, I think you have to give New England the benefit of the doubt to at least some extent; making painful short-term decisions like this is exactly how you keep yourself in contention for the long-term. Also, in a trade between the smartest franchise in football and the dumbest franchise in football, do you really want to bet that the smartest franchise hurt themselves?
Oral pleasure aside, trading down (especially from the top of the 1st Round) has tended to be better than standing pat or (especially) trading up.
Also note that Seymour is on the last year of his contract. Assuming the Patriots already know they’re not keeping him after this season, then swapping him for Oakland’s 2011 1st Rounder is absolutely the right move.
Uh oh…looks like Chargers fans have a new reason to start sobbing.
Funny – they usually wait until the post-season before the choking begins.
