NFL: Week 1 - "We're back baby!"

Wow, the NFL really wanted overtime there. 2 horrible calls against the packers. Which is impossible from what I understand.

It’s Drew Brees. The Saints offense is going to be great this year.

It’s Drew fucking Brees. He’s one of the top 4 QB’s in the league. Everything from the middle of the third quarter to the end doesn’t concern me that much, the Packers on defense were clearly playing not to lose so let him rack up as many yards as he wants. But the two stops in the red zone, including the last one where they stopped the Saints to end the game (despite the ref’s best effort) are very heartening indeed. When McNabb tears them up in a close game, then, I will worry.

Prevent defense. 3 man rush. Meant to give up the yards and stop them in the red zone.

Terrible call by Sean Peyton. He just gave away a game he had won. Oh well, it’s a very encouraging game for the rest of the Norris. GB’s defense and special teams are awful. Can’t really tell about the offense because the Saints were shit on defense too (their schemes didn’t help them. They were giving way too much cushion to the receivers at the line of scrimmage), but I saw enough to know that the rest of the division is going to have their way with them this year.

They didn’t stop shit all game. It wasn’t just the prevent defense. They flat can’t defend.

Seriously. “OC, what play hasn’t worked all game long? Up the middle? Perfect, let’s do it.” Much, much better than a fake and an easy toss to a wide open TE, or a boot, or a thousand other things.

I’m not a huge expert at the pass interference penalty nor am I a fan of Green Bay, but that call on AJ Hawk on the last play of the game seems to me like that should be the sort of play that’s legal. Didn’t affect the outcome, I guess, but still.

That game was painful to watch. Felt like an arena league game. Or worse, college.

He had it WON? New Orleans never lead the game, not even one time. Green bay got 42 offensive points and the Saints never showed any ability to stop the Packers. The Saints had it won in the same way that the Steelers had the Super Bowl won last year, which is to say that they didn’t at all.

You can argue that the Pack can’t hold on to a lead, and you might have a good argument, but what you said is patently false.

Then again, I just wasted 2 minutes typing this out because this isn’t about football, or even reality. it’s about the fact that you hate the Packers so much that to you they cannot possibly ever do anything right without it being luck, official-aided, or their opponents lying down like dogs for them.

God, now I feel dirty, having defended the damn Packers. It should be enough to say the Packers played at worst a decent game, but leave it to you to take it to the level of absurdity.

I saw that PI call on replay immediately after coming home. I’m honestly surprised people thought it was a bad call. It’s kinda obvious when you knock somebody over on the way to jumping over them to bat down a pass. Probably gonna be pass interference. And guess what? It was probably the best play of the game. If he doesn’t interfere, the Saints may have tied it. Sucks in the way that fouling intentionally to prolong a basketball game sucks, but there you have it.

  1. Why would they do that when they can schedule the 49ers v the Broncos like last year and still fill an 85,000 seat stadium for a (possibly locally blacked out) game, thus generating ticket sales money than they would otherwise?
  2. They already scheduled one of these games - Chargers v Saints in 2009. It was fucking awesome - by far the best game that we’ve had over here.
  3. You’ll never get the majority of British people to “get” American Football, just as you’re going to struggle getting the majority of Americans to “get” Association Football. But there’s still enough of us that care who’ll turn up whichever random teams you give us. I think the prevailing mood is - we’re lucky to have a game here, so let’s turn up come what may. The NFL can use/abuse this feeling for some time, I suspect.
  4. I think there’s some rule about the International Game which says that it has to be an inter-conference game. No self respecting team would give up home advantage for a divisional game in any case - but couldn’t the result of this game change homefield advantage in the playoffs if Green Bay and New Orleans are tied on record? In which case, you probably don’t want to be giving up homefield advantage for that either, even if you might earn more cash by taking the game to London.

Here’s hoping Tramon Williams is OK. I’d hate another rash of injuries like last year.

The past tense of “lead” is “led.” The Saints never led the game.

That’s all you got?

Pretty much, yeah.

  1. One TD was a kickoff return. Dio was so bent on correcting your grammar he missed this.

And I saw a totally different play. I saw Hawk leap at the ball, barely grazing the receiver, and whack the ball out of the air before landing on the receiver. That is, he went after and hit the ball first, then the defender. Looked totally legit to me (neutral observer not rooting for either team). And a hell of a play, IMO.

They showed another angle on replay from the direction of the official who threw the flag, and it did look like Hawk climbed up the receiver’s back from that angle, so I understand why he threw the flag. Maybe someone will put up a clip online at some point to test my memory - I looked but couldn’t find one.

I’m also not sure I understand why some people think this was a bad game. Because the offenses outplayed the defenses? Not enough runs up the middle for 2 yards? These are two of the best quarterbacks in the game, after all.

I enjoyed it. Had some mind-boggling throws and catches, a couple of exciting special teams touchdowns, a few nifty runs, some good defensive plays (if not consistently good defense), and a down-to-the-wire finish. But maybe I’m not enough of a football purist. :stuck_out_tongue:

Really good game, and makes me hopeful for a good season of football.

What’s Dio’s team again?
