Fewell’s been quite good, and I suspect he’ll get some attention as a HC this year. I specifically think he’ll be a nice fit in Carolina.
It’s been discussed to death but Giants have gotten all kinds of breaks with their opponents offenses. I highly doubt they finish the season with anything resembling that high a ranking. Nevertheless, being a DC of a high ranking defense on a shaky team hoping for the Wildcard puts Fewell in the exact same category as Rod Marinelli for HC jobs. Juggernauty indeed.
Fewell interim coached the Bills to a 3-4 finish. Marinelli coached the Lions to a historically bad 10-38 record. I don’t think they’re in quite the same category (although I love what Marinelli did as the Bucs’ defensive line coach).
Lovie’s not winning a division title this year unless Aaron Rodgers is hit by a car or the league moves the team to the NFC West. Anyway, you left out a critical point: a fired tested HC with an NFC Championship and 2/3 division titles.
A fired Lovie Smith that finishes this season with a 7-9 record will be a more viable HC candidate than Perry Fewell. If he finishes 10-6 or 11-5 and has a 1st round playoff exit he’ll be a legitimately hot HC candidate who will not be fired, the Bears will be negotiating with him along with everyone else. Hence my bidding war comment.
The good news for you is that San Francisco comes to Green Bay on December 5th. The Packers have already helped to show two head coaches to the door this season…
I think he will - from the Giants. Coughlin may be in his last year (whether he retires or is fired) and Fewell is young enough to be an attractive replacement.
I wonder if that would cause any unpleasantness with OC Kevin Gilbride, who’s in his 4th year with the team and has overseen some very effective offenses. Or maybe his brief, unsuccessful stint as HC with San Diego (6-16) means he’s not a candidate for promotion.
My boss is a 49er season ticket holder and will be traveling to Green Bay for that game. He told me he’ll be rooting for the Packers.
Then we continued our now-weeks-long discussion regarding who the next coach should be. He wants Harbaugh, I’d prefer Gruden. We do agree it has to be an offensive-minded coach.
Surprised you’ve given up on Troy Smith already, gary. He’s only had one bad game. Granted, he’s not exactly setting the world on fire, but he’s only turned it over once and it’s not as though the running game has done him any favors.
You really don’t want Gruden. He won a Super Bowl in Tampa with the team Dungy and McKay built, and the team got progressively worse as he assumed more and more control over personnel.
He’s got a priceless offense mind, and a worthless talent-evaluating one.
This must be the all-time least interesting MNF game ever. I think that Jags-Titans game from earlier in the year had more going for it and more discussion around here.
I totally forgot it was on. I heard Mike and Mike talking about Philip Rivers this morning and was like, “oh, yeah”. Kind of funny considering I had a 17 point lead to protect from Knowshon Moreno in my fantasy money league.
They just spent a second-rounder on Jimmy Clausen. You’d think they would give him a real shot before drafting a first rounder. I think they’ll take a tackle instead.
