But the Bucs’ defensive linemen were pretty clear in getting their message out that it was the coach’s decision and not theirs. At least they seem to understand how it works.
If they push the center into Eli and he drops the ball, they might be able to run it back. Something of the sort has happened before, to the Giants no less. No, the goal was to hit or knock someone into Eli, cause a fumble, recover the fumble, and score the winning touchdown. Merely causing a fumble would still be a failure, but I think it is obvious that such a failure would show the play wasn’t pointless. Just as successfully knocking someone into Eli and sending him sprawling before he could take a knee showed it probably wasn’t entirely pointless.
Having said that, I’m not opposed to the idea that it was bush league and just isn’t done in the NFL.
Prior experience suggests McCoy will go down with a knee injury, and if the Giants want to take deliberate shots at other players, that’s their problem.
