NFL Week 3 Discussion

Um, pull up and not take 2 steps and label the WR.

Or not.

But if the WR had caught the ball and kept his head up, it would’ve been a clean hit. It looked like he was already lunging when the pass wasn’t caught.

To me it looked like he was lunging forward to hit the receiver’s chest with his shoulder, which is exactly what he’s supposed to do. The receiver missed the ball and ducked his head down to avoid the hit, which brought his head directly in line with the defender’s shoulder pads when he was already in motion. I haven’t watched it again, but it didn’t appear that the defender had time between when the ball was missed and the receiver tucked his head down to pull off - so he was essentially punished because the receiver happened to miss the ball.

Patriots get the win, but their defense looked like a wet sheet of paper against the worst offense in football, at home. Ugh. Brady looked spectacular as always, but the offense can’t put up 38 points every week. Belichick needs to start coaching up these young guys or we’ll be lucky to make the playoffs.

Jets player just (ridiculously) obviously faked an injury to give their defense more time to rest. It was so bad Al and Chris were talking about it. I wish there were some way to penalize that shit.

With the Saints’ loss, the '72 Dolphins still have a reason to live.

Huh? There are undefeated teams left.

You think they’re worried that the Chiefs will go 16-and-0?

AS a Bears fan I LOVE it when we are the underdogs. Can’t guarantee a win, but underestimating the Bears this year will cost people some money.

Green Bay’s secondary is suspect, and Cutler is on a roll. Plus, Mr. “kick 6” is not a God.

I don’t think there is a penalty for attempting consecutive time outs (unless the rule was changed since 2006) You just don’t get the second one and you waste time, probably resulting in a delay of game when the play clock runs out.

They might be worried about the Steelers, Packers or Bears.

I thought there was some sort of unsportsmanlike conduct penalty thrown at a second attempt to call a time out.

I’m a Bengals fan and I feel the same way as you: winning a division is fine and all but getting to the Super Bowl is what I want them to do. Of course, given the Bengals proclivity for not making the Super Bowl, you can understand why some Bengals fans (and fans of any traditionally sucky team that manages a modicum of success here and there) feel like the team winning the division is a big accomplishment. Its the first stepping-stone on the way to the ultimate goal to me.

Steelers fans are just spoiled by success, and some of them are just as obnoxious with their bragging as Philly fans are in general.

Not saying you are, of course.

The Bengals are a good team, but mostly because of defense so far this season. Palmer has been uncharacteristically erratic in the last couple games. For now I’ll convince myself that it was the Ravens defense last week and the pouring rain this week.

If this shit continues next week against the Browns, then I will be worried. For now I’ll enjoy 2-1.

I think it was you who said early on that the division was the Bengals to lose. I would add, “and they will.” They’re the Bungles. That’s what they do.

ETA: I noticed that you picked Tampa Bay over the Steelers. Didn’t work out that way.

Well, yeah, seeing as how the Bengals did in fact win the division last season, then I consider it “theirs” to lose, in exactly the same manner as the Saints are the “reigning Super Bowl champions”. Meaningless words and titles, probably, in terms of being applicable to this season, but lots of people use those terms.

And as far as TB over Pitt, it wasn’t a serious pick. It was wishful thinking. The Bucs weren’t a very convincing 2-0 with wins over the Browns and Panthers with a QB that didn’t crack 200 yards passing or a RB that didn’t break 100 yards in either game.

Not just underdogs, but underdogs at home. On Monday Night. In an interdivisional rivalry game. Oddsmakers must think little of the Bears.

If you were starting a franchise today, and had to pick between Cutler or Rodgers as your teams QB, which would you choose? That’s right, Rodgers. Sure he’s not a god, but he’s the best QB in NFC North.

I love the matchups in this game. Martz v. Capers, can Capers keep the Martz offense in check. Lovie v. McCarthy, can McCarthy find the holes in the defense. Finley v. Urlacher, can Jermichael use his size and speed to beat Urlacher? Hester v. Shields, will our rookie nickel CB be a liability when Cutler goes after him over and over and over? Matthews v. Kevin Shaffer, how many times will Matthews sit on Cutler’s head tonight? Cutler v. Woodson, can Woodson bait Cutler into interceptions?

This should be an interesting game.

I don’t think it will be all that close. The Bears should dominate on both sides of the ball at home. The Packers defense, especially, is very suspect. They were fairly soft against the Bills, and the only time they faced any kind of effective offense at all (Michael Vick), they were completely exposed. The Packers defense was like a drunk girl at a bar and Michael Vick was like Ben Roethlisberger. He did whatever he wanted. I think Mike Martz will take them apart.

On the other side of the ball, the Packers have no run game without Grant, and we already know that Rodgers folds up like a cheap tent under a good pass rush.

The only thing the Bears have to look out for is Clay Matthews, but if they scheme their protections aginst him (i.e. fucking triple team that lunatic), the Bears should be all right, and Martz bases his offense on quick hitting pass plays anyway, so the Bears should be able to manage Matthews ok.

I really think this matchup is overrated, and the Bears will win going away.

Jimmy Raye of the 49ers has to be the worst offensive coordinator in the league. Romeo Crennel had his players correctly predicting playcalls and jumping routes they’d seen on film. But Singletary, blindly stubborn, has put his faith behind an offensive philosophy that would have been outdated 80 years ago. He’s not an X’ and O’x kind of coach, so of course, the problem is execution. Perhaps he thinks it would help if David Carr was the one handing off to Gore up the middle on three consecutive plays.

The 49ers are ripe to be outcoached every game going forward, because they don’t change anything on offensive from week to week. I think the only reasons they did so well against the Sainst was they came in overconfident and are a little undersized on defense.

Moran Norris is getting beaten to the holes by the linebackers, then pushed backwards. He can’t catch, and even if he could, a D-lineman could cover him. How about spreading out the defense with an extra wideout instead?
No, we’ll be fine bunching all our big, slow blockers together. On second thought, let’s run the whole game with a fullback and three tight ends.

OK, if you’re going to let the opposing defense get all their players within a few yards of the ball carrier, how about some misdirection?
No, that’s unsingletarian. We’re going to impose our throbbing, gigantic will on defenses. That means Gore up the middle.

Throw it downfield? Run off-tackle? Move the pocket? Create mismatches?
I don’t understand any of the words you’re using. This interview is over…
