NHL 2014-2015 Season: The Thread

Never heard of it. Am now.

ETA: Actually I’m curious how you Americans remember the epic Canada vs. Russia series of the day, especially the inaugural 1972 Summit.

What did you think, or were you even aware of the games?

I wasn’t even born yet. I did read Ken Dryden’s “Face-Off at the Summit”. If you can get your hands on it, it’s an excellent read.

NHL is suspending Sidney Crosby for one game for not playing in the ASG. He should be well rested for Wednesday games against the Caps.

Good. They set that precedent with Lidstrom and Datsyuk, It would have been pretty blatant if they let Crosby skate(hehe).

So he’s not the first one? Huh. I still think it’s stupid, but oh well. On the other hand, Letang’s back. AND Rinaldo got 8 games. So there is a silver lining.

In other news, Martin Brodeur retires.

I’m sad to see Brodeur retire and I am a bit surprised that he didn’t wait until after the trade deadline.

I’m surprised Brodeur took a job in the front office of St. Louis.

I guess I always assumed he’d return to New Jersey.

I had read he was staying with the Blues through the end of the season but returning to the Devils after.

I was surprised too. I imagine there’s some sort of clause that he could return to the team should they lose a goalie for an extended time. The Blues have playoff hopes, the Devils do not. He can return to the Devils next season in some sort of front office job.

I’m also surprised the Devils didn’t offer him the old “one-day contract”, so he could retire with them, like Mike Modano (Stars) and Tom Barrasso (Penguins) did.

What is “abuse of officials”? Steve Downie got 10 minutes for that in last night’s (1/28) game?

Maybe it’s code for “10 Minutes for Being Steve Downie”?

He went all potty mouth to the ref after Latta drew a blood sample from his face.

Downie must a called the guy a cocksucker.

After hearing some of the verbal exchanges with the refs on “Road to the Winter Classic”, I would guess your language has to get pretty extreme to draw that penalty.

I would think the penalty for being Steve Downie would have been more than 10 minutes.

I was curious about the most expensive hockey fight in terms of the salaries of the participants. I know Crosby and Ovechkin rarely fight but both have been in at least one. Mike Green fought Ilya Kovalchuk. My first attempts to google didn’t turn up anything.

Pavel Datsyuk vs Corey Perry, perhaps? $10 million vs $9 million with their current contracts (I’m not sure what they were at the time).

Hehe, good memories. Pavel is badasser than he looks, and Perry is a bitch.
Plus it’s always good to hear Mickey call a fight, even if I’ve seen it 25 times

But he was only about 6M at the time.

Smaller cap, it works out the same
I found the numbers- much tougher without CapGeek. 6.7 for Pavel and 6 for Perry.

I loved that fight, I think it was Pasha’s only Gordie Howe hat trick.

What the hell is going on?!?! Has someone spiked the gatorade at CEC? I had to turn it off early in the 3rd period, I was so disgusted. I just cannot even.

I was about ready to cry. Yes, I’ve cried over sports.
