NHL 2014-2015 Season: The Thread

For any who haven’t heard Gordie is a lot better these days

Awesome!!!

Metro is interesting right now - three standings points between the top four teams.

Yeah, OK, bad form to quote myself maybe. But I went to a Texas Stars AHL game last night, and for the first time this season I got to see the new AHL OT format played out so I thought I’d revisit this topic we discussed early in the season. I’ve seen a couple of other OT games but they ended before they got to the good stuff.

What they’re doing now is playing a 7 minute OT and switching ends. They play 4 on 4 for the first 3 minutes, and at the first stoppage after 3 minutes they go to 3 on 3. It was nuts. I haven’t seen the stats on it, but it has to be cutting down the number of games that get decided by a shootout (although this game did wind up going to the shootout). Couple of observations about the 3 on 3: It’s damned near impossible to get a line change when the puck is in play - you just can’t afford the time. Faceoffs become enormously important. And the crowd energy and intensity went up about 3 notches.

Yeah, the purists would probably hate it. But you know what, this game has changed a lot over the years and that’s not going to stop anytime soon. I thought it was cool as hell, and I’d love to see the NHL adopt this format.

Leafs win! Leafs win!

God. I don’t even know what to say anymore.

Shanny: Blow them the hell up!

Buffalo wins.

For obvious reasons, Randy Carlyle needs to win coach of the year.

Great game with Caps vs Penguins.

Yes it was. I think I forgot to breathe for the last few minutes. These two teams hate each other, and it always makes for some great games.

The officiating was lousy. Yeah, Ovie should’ve gotten 2 minutes for that slash, but there were bad calls all around.

Yes. Not sure which feed you were watching but the Caps announcers said the same thing.

Bad calls and then they just lost control of the game. When they tried to regain it, they made inconsistent (with the early part) calls.

I was watching the Caps feed, yeah. I live in L.A., so I watch their games through Gamecenter Live.

The Caps won because they maintained composure after it all went to hell.

My sister just sent me this joke:

I heard that joke, only it was the Flyers, not the Leafs.

How the hell did Ovi get away with it? I liked Letang’s response when Ovi claimed he was just going for the puck:

I was just starting to like him, too. As it is, I was hoping Downie would put him in a world of hurt.

It should have been a penalty, no doubt. But watch the replay carefully:

Look where Letang’s foot is when Ovechkin starts the swing at it. Not near the puck at all. Ovechkin is swinging at the puck. And then, at the last second, Letang swings his foot over to the puck, right into the path of Ovechki’s stick. It was unfortunate, and extra unfortunate that he took a tumble and slid into the boards. I’m glad he’s okay and got back in the game. But Ovechkin was not swinging at his leg. It was late in the game of a 1-1 tie. Say what you will about Ovie, but he’s not a goon, and he’s not an idiot. He was going for the puck.

I completely agree.

Sigh…

Why am I watching the bloody Leafs again? This is worse than the Ballard years.

Went to the Caps vs Islanders today. Today at least, two very disciplined teams - only one high stick, one bench minor, one fight - no other penalties.

Well the Wings are giving a wide spectrum these days. Two games ago the game was scoreless for 58 minutes. Today ? 7-6 overtime win, overcoming two 2 goal deficits.

Eric Lindros is suing former NHL ref Paul Stewart. Lindros claims he was portrayed as a ‘Dickhead’ in one of Stewarts’ on line columns.

I wait with baited breath for Lindros to prove, in a court, that he isn’t a dickhead.
