Sam Gagner with 8 points for the Oilers in an 8-4 win over the Hawks.
You look at this list, and he’s got to be at least the second-most unlikely guy to have done it, ahead of the immortal Tom Bladon.
Had a hell of a time at the Kings game last night. Crowd when apeshit when Doughty scored that goal with -.5 seconds left
Chris Lee needs to go away. Far, far away from hockey. He can take O’Halorhan, Furlat and Peel with him. I am so sick of watching games being decided by the referees. And how bush league is game clock story?
And the NHL is allegedly a “pro” league.
If the clock malfunctioned, that’s on the Staples Center, not the NHL.
During an NHL game, with rules and regulations and all, like a big, grown up sport!
It looks bad for the game and for the league, regardless of who is actually responsible (I’m amazed that there doesn’t seem to be any back-up or redundancy, to be honest).
The ones on the list that caught my eye were the brothers with eight points each in the same game.
Yeah but the Stastny brothers were uber talented and played at a time when goaltending was pretty crappy. Same with Sittlers’ 10 point game.
Jimmy Howard of the Red Wings will be out for two weeks, so I get to see a lot of Ty Conklin and his .886 save percentage between the pipes (and Jimmy’s minor league replacement, who can’t possibly be any worse).
I see that Owen Nolan is retiring. TBH, I thought he retired a couple of years ago. Anyway his called shot in the all-star game was just fantastic.
Sam Gagner already has 2 goals in the 1st period of the Edmonton/Detroit game.
Yeah, It’s a good thing for Detroit games against the bottom teams in the league like Islanders, Montreal, and Edmonton don’t count in the standings.
Wait… What… Your kidding, can you please let Babcock know?
In other the news, I think Conklin’s career in Detroit just ended. I wonder whether they will roll with Macdonald as backup or look to trade for one.
I think the clock is pretty fucked up at Staples. Every time that night they went to showing tenths of a second, the clock was stuttering and not counting down in a smooth, linear fashion.
Zac Rinaldo gets fined $5000 ($2500 x2) for two separate incidents in the same game: a late hit from behind and a slew foot after the whistle.
He explains his slew foot as “stirring the pot” when his team was down 6-2 (well, he actually describes it as 6-0, but he’s such a tool he wasn’t even aware of the score at the time).
His lame justification, complete lack of remorse and pattern of behavior indicate strongly that he’s going to keep doing such things. It’s players like him that need to be come down hard on, and if the League were really serious about protecting players they wouldn’t allow obvious attempts at injuring players slide just because they didn’t result in injury. Eventually they will.
Even worse than Shanahan’s ineptitude in the matter is some Flyer’s fans defense of it, and attempts to spin the fight between Kovalchuk and Schenn after the slew foot as Kovalchuk picking on a rookie because Schenn got his ass kicked. Just despicable.
In other related news, the Devils actually scored 6 goals in a game, though they did do their best to make amends by allowing the Flyers to outshoot them 24 to 1 in the third period and score 4 goals to turn a blowout laugher into a tense game.
Still, wins in succession over the Rangers, Flyers and Penguins, all teams above them in the division and conference standings, have them in a pretty good place.
They won a shootout! They won a shootout! Hope that monkey’s gone for good!
This is a rather sweet story about Max Pacioretty. When he was in the hospital after having his neck broken, he met a young man who had just awaken from a coma following a car accident, and held an old lady’s hand as she dealt with her needle phobia. He’s raising money for a functional MRI for the local hospital. He really impresses me.
How sweet is that?
So, there was apparently a bit of controversy in the Rangers/Devils game last night with a very late tying goal being waved off and a penalty for goalie interference being assessed, essentially icing the 1-0 game.
I didn’t get to see it in real time and was exposed to Rangers fans posing as media personalities ranting about it before I ever got to see it, and already have personal biases both for the Devils and against the Rangers so I’m aware I’m unable to see it objectively. Unsurprisingly, most Rangers fans think it’s a terrible call while most Devils fans see it as the correct call, but what’s the consensus of those with little to no interest in the outcome of the game?
[conspiracy]Depends on which team does the scoring/gets scored on.
Who was the referee?
MY GUESS based on my opinion of them and their ability to correctly identify a goalie interference call: Chris Lee, Tim Peel or Dan O’Rourke[/conspiracy]
I honestly think this is one of those shitty cases where the call was made because the crappy referees apply this rule randomly and simply couldn’t be overturned based on the evidence; had it been called a goal on the ice, it would have stayed a goal, I think.
But then, I loathe the NHL’s referees as a whole, so I’m biased too…just not in favour of either the Devils or Rangers (though I love Marty Brodeur for no reason other than he’s Marty Brodeur)
Well, In my not-the-biggest-hockey-expert opinion, I think it’s pretty close either way. I’ve gone back and forth twice already as I watch the video (the Ranger tried to slow down, and did get a shove, but the shove was at least as much sideways as towards the goal, with the defenders arms actually in front of the Ranger). So, no matter which way it was called, it clearly wasn’t a particularly bad call. Sometimes calls really are close.
(I’m in Bruinlandia, and don’t follow the rest of the league enough to particularly be biased for or against anyone except the Canadiennes).
Oooh look, funny, you used the feminine…as if that’s a bad thing?
You’ve just triggered one of my peeves. Enough with using female terms as insults to men; it’s also insulting to women and makes you look like a boor.
NHL to make major announcement on Thursday.
What could it be? Something about the Coyotes or just another Sidney Crosby health update.
I’d hazard a guess and say that it will be the announcement of the 2013 Winter Classic.
