NHL: February 2012

“The event will continue at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich.”

Ding ding ding

I love how they announce things fans have already known for months. Way to go, NHL!

And in the continuing saga of how much I loathe this league but love the game, I just read this:

Stay classy, NHL.

(and because the rest of that article is about the spinorama in shootouts…I hate the shootout gimmick to begin with, but think the spinorama goes against the spirit of the game and don’t like it. Yes, even when Lars Eller did it.)

Speaking of classy, how about them Bruins? Lucic and his cheap stick to the head of a player that was down and Thornton coming off the bench to start a fight…They really need to be brought under control.

Well to be fair the Bruins have issued statements that they are unfairly targeted by the league.

Their recent slump really isn’t their fault. It is everyone else out to get them. These poor guys just need more cheese to go with their whine.

The Senators are making me sad. I was holding up my sportsfan head so high in December and January!

Gomez!!!

MOTHERFUCKING RETARDED REFEREES AND REVIEWERS IN TORONTO

A 6’1" man, PLUS 2-3 inches of skates, standing upright, has shoulders that are located HIGHER than the motherfucking crossbar!

GEOMETRY 101, you retards.

Hat trick for Max Pacioretty and a Habs win, but fuck the idiots officiating hockey games.

The Bruins have been whining for generations – it’s in their charter, I think. They got pissy when Pittsburgh decided to adopt black and gold as their colors back in 1980. (Because it’s not like any other teams have similiar colors, oh no!)

I like shoot outs. Better shoot outs than a tie. Besides, Malkin’s spin was fucking awesome.

Malkin’s spin was pretty good; Price’s reaction was “well, after he stuck his butt in my face, all I saw were black pants”, which I figure might be praise? hehehe Price got a piece of it, but not enough to keep the puck out, which is pretty impressive compared to how unpantsed other goalies have been on spinoramas.

I’d rather have a tie, or 3-on-3 OT, or if the shootout must stay, at least make ALL games 3 pointers. Enough of this extra point bullshit in the standings (yes, I realize that makes my team even worse overall this season, but I still prefer it for the league).

I swear I will get photos of a 5’6" person (you know, for David Desharnais) and a 6’1" (for everyone else in the league) standing in different positions next to a goalie net to show exactly how retarded the concept of “shoulder height but below the crossbar” is for people who are, essentially standing upright. I will send it to every sports journalist, league email, everywhere I can find. I will make it my mission to remove this particular display of sheer fucking stupidity from the earth. It’s not even the effect on the game that bothers me, so much as the clear indication that the people making these choices are dumb as rocks and must have failed grade 3 math. I remember one guy (not in a Habs game) who was trying to compare a high-stick tip-in to the cross bar, and along with the usual “we just don’t have the camera angles” bullshit, he says something like “what about if he’s further down the ice?” as if being further away from the net somehow means that 4 feet vertical off the ice surface corresponds to a different plane of reality. MATH TEACHERS: HERE IS A REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE TO USE IN GEOMETRY CLASS!!

Honestly, I am way too riled up about this, but it’s at least 3 times now this season that this has happened just against the Habs, who knows how many times against other teams, and not only is it a bad call but it’s blatantly falsifiable.

::runs off to make picket signs::
DOWN WITH STUPIDITY!
::/picket signs::

Lucic and Thornton were not suspended or fined for their crap against Buffalo this week? I am now reversing my original opinion of Shanahan. He started strong but holy fuck I have lost my respect for him now.

Nothing quite like watching the Habs beat the snot out of the Leafs on Mats Sundin Night. While in Ottawa, with 2 Sens fans, on a day where the Sens lost, at home.

We also went skating on the Rideau canal and had some Beavertails and hot chocolate and admired the ice sculptures and listened to music at Winterlude, and then had burgers and beer while watching the game.

Yesterday was a good day.

Rinaldo faces hearing for a charging penalty he took yesterday in a game against Detroit.

Boy it seems like only a few days ago I was lamenting that the League didn’t come down harder on this sack of shit because his pathetic excuses and lack of remorse showed he would only continue this type of behavior.

I’m a freaking prophet.

Wow, what a trade… I was expecting a 3rd or 4th pick for Hal Gill (who I love, but it was obvious he’d be traded for the playoffs) but a 2012 2nd rounder, Blake Geoffiron and Robert Slaney for Gill and a conditional 2013 5th is pretty decent! Who knew Skillsy was that highly valued? Even if the two prospects don’t pan out, a 2nd rounder this year is pretty sweet.

Blake becomes the fourth generation in his family to suit up for the Habs (or will, once he does so), following the the footsteps of his father, Dan, his grand-father, Bernie “Boom-Boom” and his great-grandfather Howie Morenz.

No pressure, kiddo!

What can we get for Travis Snipes Moen?

Ha - just what Nashville needed - another big defenseman. Weber and Suter need help to play the trap effectively enough to bore fans to actual tears.

Does this mean Suter is out this summer as he’ll be UFA? I would so love Suter or Weber to find their way to the Canucks, and I wonder if Nashville will keep both since they have a self imposed cap.

Has Montreal completely given up hope for the playoffs then? A fire sale in the making perhaps?

I don’t think it will be a full fire sale, but there will be movement I think. People are assuming one of either Moen or Kostitsyn will be moved, even though a lot of fans would love to see both of them stay (yes, even Kostitsyn).

There’s a general idea that Yannick Weber and Raphael Diaz are too similar, and Diaz seems to have out-developed Weber, so Weber could be packaged and moved simply to gain parts for the team and let the kid develop. This whole playing-on-the-fourth-line experiment has hampered his development, IMHO.

No one actually seems to like or care about Campoli or Kaberle - they are both rentals in the eyes of many, despite Kaberle’s contract - and if they could be packaged and shipped out, I think people would be happy and don’t even see it as affecting “the team.”

And if there’s a puck shortage, we’ll give Gomez away - there might be a cap floor team who might like his as his salary drops below his hit next year ($5M v $7.5M IIRC) and drops again the year after that. He’s good in the room and might help out a young team. Or so we fervently hope

I guess that might be a fire sale. There’s a pretty good core of young guys, though, and there are a few prospects on the horizon that look good for next year or the one after. I think this season was much more a combination of injuries and bad luck leading to a downward spiral of confidence than it was a matter of talent - that sounds like excuses, but in the games where the Habs have won, they were often dominant and showed they could play against the best. 21 blown third period leads and terrible shootout and PP stats just killed them. I’m not sure they are contenders yet, but they are far from bottom feeders in terms of talent.

IMHO.

WTF.
So far, goals from Kaberle, Gomez and Campoli. I have no idea what to think.

Blake Geoffrion.

That is so freaking cool.

Awesome.

So far, the talk has been pretty rational about his potential and where he might fit into an NHL roster, but…yeah… that name carries some burden for the poor kid. The Bell Centre will blow it’s roof when he scores his first goal as a Hab!

So it looks like Miller picks today to get his shit together. Fuck.
