NHL 2014-2015 Season: The Thread

Where’s Darius Kasparaitis when you need him?
(Yes, I know that’s really, really classless)

Patrick Kane out for the Blackhawks for up to 10 weeks. Jagr as a possible short term fill in?

That’s twice in the last week and a half or so that one of the top scorers in the league has been taken out on a questionable hit by a Panther. The Stars lost Tyler Seguin for several weeks on 2/13 when he got clipped by Dmitry Kulikov (Kulikov got a 4 game suspension). The cross check that knocked Kane off balance last night didn’t look like much, but that was a nasty slide into the boards. Haven’t heard yet if Petrovic might be looking at league action.

That was a pretty garden variety cross-check in my opinion. I would say it’s not much more than 50-50 it even gets called with a ref looking at it. It wasn’t that hard, but it seemed to be at the unpadded kidney area and close to the wall. I’d be seriously surprised if anything more is coming.
I’d care more if it wasn’t a cab driver beating douche who got hurt.

The Canes trade Andrej Sejera to the Kings for a conditional 1st and Roland MeKeown. They also trade Jiri Tlusty to the Jets for a 2015 3rd Rounder, a conditional 5th/6th 2015 pick, and 8 inches of Winnipeg snow.

Another good Caps-Penguins game last night. Penguins dominated significant portions of the game but it still came down to the last few minutes.

Anyone know the rules regarding the bench? I could see Latta getting something for entering the other teams bench, even if it was to help his teammate. The players on the bench who got involved is what I don’t know.

Is the Columbus GM smoking crack? Why would he trade for Clarkson and his albatross like contract?

Because he’s constrained by total salary, not the cap. Horton can’t play but still gets paid about the same amount as Clarkson (Horton’s contract was not insured), who can play. Columbus would rather pay a player who can play.

Horton essentially doesn’t count against the cap, so it works for the Leafs, who don’t care about salary nearly as much as they do about the cap.

I’m trying to figure this out too. Columbus is paying an injured Horton, who may never play again, so they now pay Clarkson about the same amount and he plays. Got it.

But, what? The Leafs now don’t have to pay Horton because he’s injured and so they free up cap space unless Horton comes back?

Why the double standard, or what am I missing?

Horton still gets paid. However, his salary does not count against the cap.

Ah. And for a cash-rich team like Toronto they don’t give a shit. They freed up the cap space. Got it.

ETA: It sounds like a good deal for both teams really.

Now that Jagr’s been traded to Florida, I’ll finally stop hearing about how he’s coming back to Pittsburgh on all the Pens fans sites. I wear this one guy on one of my facebook groups couldn’t shut up about it.

I don’t know, but apparently it went viral. And I do believe that Ovi had a hissyfit after the game.

Putting Hornqvist on the same line as Crosby has really improved things.

Technically, Horton still counts against the cap. However, he goes on the long-term injured reserve (LTIR), and the Leafs will be allow to exceed the cap by the amount of his salary. However, as I understand it there are some limitations:

  • I believe that the Leafs may have to do some weird roster moves at the beginning of the season, because they don’t get the LTIR space until the first game of the season or something like that. It’s not a big deal but I think that they end up having to officially assign some players to the minors and then recalling them for the first game or something like that.

  • If a team spends $2 million under the cap during the season, at the trade deadline they can acquire a player with a $6 million cap hit (or something like that), because they only have to pay 1/3 of his contract. However, the Leafs don’t benefit from this because they are exceeding the cap and you can’t “bank” unused LTIR space the way that you can unused cap space.
Still, it’s much better than spending $5.75 million in cap space on a third-line player.

That is the description from Penguins fans and many Canadians. I like having someone on the team who doesn’t take losing lightly. He was about as frustrated as the Penguins were the last game. Its hockey.

Woohoo, Wings finish the 6 game road trip from hell with 9 of 12 points. Pretty sweet.

Canes trade Gleason to Caps, beat the Isles 5-3.

Hockey’s hockey, but you still don’t act like a spoiled brat. Wait until you get to the locker room.

Man, trade deadline is so boring these days. Nothing very big, Yandle is probably the biggest name moving.

Wings made a couple veteran depth moves(Marek Zidlicky,Erik Cole) that I approve of. Yandle would have been nice, but he’s not worth a top prospect like Arizona wanted from the Wings. And I’m damn glad they didn’t panic and waste their future on Phaneuf who I have always thought is hugely overrated, and slowing down very young. I’ve always liked Zidlicky, and he is decent offensive right-hander D. A third round pick is a fair price. Never made much notice of Cole. But size and protection against getting short due to injuries is a good thing. A couple C list prospects who weren’t likely to see NHL ice anytime soon, and a 2nd rounder seems a little bit high, but nothing I have a problem with.

And in the category of wasted potential, consider this shot by Alexander Semin.

4 goals for $7million. A complete waste.
