All announcers, play-by-play and color, are supposed to be impartial.
The Rangers and the Yankees are both shown on the MSG (Madison Square Garden) network. The Yankees announcers are quite often called “homies”.
It bothers me. I think on this thread folks were talking about the great Vin Scully. You cannot tell what “side” he is on. That’s the gold standard of a baseball announcer. In Hockey - the great Don Cherry.
Probably. Still, there’s hope. The Habs outshot Tampa in every one of the four games, including the one they lost 6-2. Two of three losses were very narrow, with Tampa winning one in second OT and the other one second before the buzzer.
The Habs obviously have big problems, they’re ineffective, their powerplay sucks balls, but that aside they have been dominating and Tampa winning the first 3 games does not really reflect the balance between these two teams.
It’s highly unlikely for the Habs to turn this around but if they can keep up some of the effectiveness they showed yesterday (I realize a big part of that was Bishop getting pulled) I don’t see Tampa having a super easy time clinching this, they’ll have to work hard for it and I would not be surprised if this went to game 7.
Granted, I probably don’t watch as much NHL as the other contributors to this thread but does anybody else think that teams pulling their goalie are getting scored upon at an extraordinary rate in this year’s playoffs?
My wife and I were watching some Stanley Cup playoff action a couple of weeks back. I forget which series it was but at one point one of the teams pulled the goalie and my wife said something along the lines of: “I hate when teams do that. It makes me nervous!”
I don’t remember exactly how I responded but I remember thinking, at least: “Well, it’s certainly a risky maneuver but most of the time I think the team going for the extra attacker simply doesn’t score the goal it needs to tie the game. I don’t think these pros normally give up goals very often after they’ve pulled their goaltender.”
Man, have I been wrong in these playoffs! Seems to me that just about every time I’ve seen a team pull its goalie that its been scored upon, sometimes within seconds of doing so and sometimes on some REALLY fluky shots (the one that comes to mind is when Detroit pulled its goalie against Tampa Bay and I swear moments later were scored upon when a Lightning player caromed one off the boards from nearly the length of the ice to seal Detroit’s fate).
Does anybody know the statistics for NHL teams when they pull their goalie? How many times they score? How many times they are scored upon? And how many times neither team scores after one team has pulled its goaltender?
Wow, just an amazing game in a great Rangers/Caps series. The Caps fought so hard after falling behind, Lundqvist still had a save % of .933 after giving up 3 goals. After about 10:00 in the 3rd, it was hard to see how the Rangers could realistically keep that game out of overtime.
I’m going to have to work Wed. night. I’ll be listening, but I bet it’ll be a great game to watch.
I noticed that. A few years ago there was a guy showing up at Caps games in a similar costume. I got the impression that is was mostly a ploy because people would give him tickets to have him in their section because that would get them on the big screen.
I haven’t been that great at following and posting about the playoffs this year due to both the Bruins’ failure and some RL stuff… but I just want to drop in and say that game 7s, tied late, with Doc announcing, are one of the great pleasures in life.
And the Rangers put the Caps away in Game Seven Overtime! The Rangers are the first team in NHL history to come back from down 3-1 in a series in consecutive years and their last FOURTEEN playoff games have been decided by one goal.
Ducks in 7? Never! If the Hawks lose it will be sooner, because sometimes they don’t get serious right away. So Ducks in 5 or Hawks in 7. But I’m betting on the Hawks.
I didn’t stay up to watch a west coast game but the three overtime game last night sounds great. The disallowed goal was the first time I’d seen someone try to head-butt the puck in the net.
Babcock is going to Toronto! I hate to see him leave the Wings, but I think Toronto made a good move. I personally hope he can restore some of the glory to one of the league’s most storied franchises.
