NHL cancels first two weeks of the season

Not a big hockey fan, but the poor league has done enough self-inflicted damage and I thought it had righted its ship over the past few years. This is a shame.

I think the past failures might be making it worse. Both sides seem to be convinced that the other side won’t let it happen again. Plus NHL owners seem to have a remarkable amount of stupidity. This is backed up by the fact that they thought buying an NHL team was a good business decision.

It’s more than a shame – this is the third lockout under Gary Bettman’s tenure. The last one was only 8 years ago, and the entire season was cancelled. I know the guy is employeed by the owners, but three lockouts? What’s the common denominator here?

The city here is losing money because of the cancelled games, and I imagine arena employees are as well from having their hours cut. Fuck.

I JUST WANT TO WATCH HOCKEY!!! (But around here, there’s really no alternative, plus I love my Pens!)

I am guessing that there will not be any meaningful progress until some time in the middle of November. Players will be getting their escrow from last season in the next week or so.

The lockout’s effect on the local economy

Fans here in Columbus are pissed about the probability of the All Star game being cancelled. We have nothing else to look forward to in terms of hockey.

I bet if they start putting together teams of scabs the players will cave.

I won’t shed any tears if the lockout goes on for a long time. Hockey wastes way too much precious space in the newspaper sports section and wastes way too much precious time on sports highlights shows.

Well, on the plus side, my team hasn’t lost a game yet!

Ke$ha sucks.

The current lockout is somewhat different from the 2004-5 version. Back then, the entire league was losing money, so from the owners’ economic perspective it actually paid off to cancel the season. The owners got the salary cap and “cost certainty” they wanted in 2005, and since then the league itself has been quite profitable (individual results, as always, would vary–18 teams are losing money if you believe the league).

Right now, by canceling the first two weeks, the lost revenue to the players would be close to the percentage cut in salaries the owners are looking for (for this year at least). The NHLPA have said they are willing to accept salary cuts in the future–just not the draconian ones the league presented for this year–and despite the presence of Donald Fehr there is absolutely no challenge to the concept of the cap from the players (probably because the owners would want to renegotiate guaranteed contracts in exchange, which the players don’t want to lose).

In a sense, the owners have already “won” the lockout, they’re just too proud to accept a compromised victory. IMO the owners will come to realize this, offer a deal that put the split at close to 50-50 (probably scaled down to this value over the next few years), and have a public handshake in the next few weeks.

They’ve ruined the NHL some time ago. Too damn many teams, the moronic unbalanced scheduling, the asinine shootouts, the dreaded trapezoid. I want to see them come back if only so they get the outdoor game in Ann Arbor in this season.

As does your post in this thread. Go shit in someone else’s thread.

Where can they get scabs from? The minor leagues are still playing. College hockey is still playing. You’re talking European leagues and beer leagues. That’d be some damn thrilling hockey.

This saddens me immensely. I am lucky enough to have post-season baseball to tide me over, for now, but I would rather watch the Blues continue their resurrection. Oh, and I guess the Rams don’t totally suck this year either. Maybe I’ll buck up. Go Cards

That and and alot of the players have said that they’re willing to play under the old agreement while the new CBA is being worked out. Most of them just want to play hockey.

I WANT TO SEE MY PENGUINS!!! (They don’t show any of the minor leagues on tv or play them on the radio around here)
