mmm
Why not just package peanut butter in short stubby jars whose mouths are as wide as their bodies? Like what this guy’s product looks like once he’s tossed away the empty top half of the jar - why not just start like that in the first place?
And while we’re redesigning things: Nutella, your jar sucks.
The technical problems of making two seals don’t look major, but there would be added manufacturing costs. Would some people pay a dime extra for the jar? I don’t think many would.
My biggest problem with peanut butter jars is not getting the PB out, but washing the jars for recycling. I pour in some hot water and shake for 40 seconds. The new jar design would have an extra piece that would add to the cleaning time.
With something like a peanut butter jar, I don’t think cleaning is a big deal. My understanding is that you have to clean your recyclables to keep the rodents at bay. If you put the lid on, that shouldn’t be an issue. Once they get to the recycling place, they’re getting tossed in a furnace and any remaining peanut butter is going to get burned off anyways.
I rinse out aluminum cans and things that don’t have a lid because I don’t want a big sticky/smelly mess in my recycling bin, but it it’s got a lid it just gets tossed in as is.
ETA, but if you were concerned about mice, you would still have to clean that separate ring. However, manufacturers don’t care about that and aren’t going to give it any thought.
My concern (as others have said). Is how you seal it? I’m not even thinking about making sure no ones tampered with it, but how do you keep the product from leaking out while it’s still above that point? Also, there’s going to have to be some thought given to make sure you can’t accidentally separate the halves when you try to remove the lid, but at the same time you can’t make the top half so hard to remove that people give up and go back to the old model.
besides the issue of having to apply a contamination seal at two location there is:
peanut butter (good quality, not imitation) has the oil separate and move to the top. this container would leak if used for that.
good for Darren being creative.
Maybe instead of a two part container he’s better off with a container that shrinks as it get’s used. IIRC, there was a container in the 80’s that did it. I want to say it was Tang, but I’m not sure if that was it. It had an accordion style body like a bendy straw and as the contents got lower you could push it down. I would think that most of the peanut butter would squish out of the grooves as you pushed it down.
So how does this let you catch more mice? I know peanut butter makes for good bait, but I’m not seeing how you can catch mice with it…
I’m not sure if their policy has changed, but at one time my recycler requested that caps and lids be removed. A quick google turned up lots of people asking why caps and lids needed to to removed when recycling, so it seems to be a common policy.
(The common answer to the questions was that the jars and lids were made from different types of plastic and should be recycled separately.)
