It’s January 1 and time for the annual Winter Classic. Oh wait, it’s actually the Centennial Classic today and the Winter Classic is tomorrow. In my opinion, these outdoor games have overstayed their welcome. Want to do an annual one to compete against college football and basically meaningless bowl games? Fine. But the constant recycling of the same big ratings teams in outdoor games is getting quite old.
Wow, it turned out to be a pretty good game. We’re potentially being sent into overtime at the last second.
But that intermission entertainment, ugh.
The hockey itself was quite entertaining, compared to the awful slate of NFL football broadcast in Chicago. But, yes, the nonsense between periods and interviews were annoying.
I thought the game was a yawner until the 3rd period, but that and the OT were some ddamn good hockey. I have to work tomorrow so I’m gonna miss the Winter Classic for the first time in a couple of years, unfortunately.
Blue Jackets steak has ended.
I am a Caps STH, by brother-in-law is a Blue Jackets STH.
I had mixed feelings about this one. I would have liked to have seen the Blue Jackets set the record. But there would be no guarantee they’d win their next one and for my interests, I wanted the Pens to not have the winning streak. On the other hand, I didn’t want Torts to have the win streak record.
I actually like the Penguins, I just find Penguins fans to be the most obnoxious, Caps fans are a close second in that category (really, throwing hats for two regulation goals and a shoot out goal??)
I am utterly astonished how good the Blue Jackets are this year. Last year they set a record for most losses to start the season (0-8) and they weren’t just losing, they were getting their doors blown off every single night. I know a lot of folks don’t care for Tortorella, but I have to hand it to him for turning this team around.
Ovechkin’s 1000th (and 1001st) career point. Beating the Pens 5-2, and passing them in the standings. 7th win in a row. Tonight was a good night.
How bad would it be to have tickets to that game hoping to see point 1,000 and missing it while waiting for a break in play to enter the arena? That happened to several people.
That fucking sucked. I can’t believe how shitty we were last night. WTF happened? Hopefully we’ll get the win tonight.
(Oh well, wait until the playoffs, Caps. Remember last season?)
Last season was last season. Bring it on; not scared at all!
(Okay, that’s a damn dirty lie. Always terrified playing the Pens, ESPECIALLY in post season! )
The Caps almost ALWAYS fall apart in the post-season.
Four minutes into the game and the Wild have 2 shots against the Stars - and 3 goals.
Yep, that was terrible. The silver lining for me was that Dallas managed to make it into a decent game.
We still lost, but I’m kinda used to that happening this season.
Holy shit. That’s all I can say.
I really, really don’t like to blame losses on bad officiating - honestly I don’t, and if you’re giving up 7 goals, your defense is having a shitty night, and the blame has to start there. The Caps lost because of rare bad goaltending and shoddy defense tonight. But, HOLY SHIT, that was some of the worst professional officiating I think I’ve ever seen. I’m not talking one or two missed calls, but an entire evening of crap.
This, in OT, 20 or so seconds before the GWG… how is Crosby not called for a trip here?
But yeah. Crazy game! They’ll be talking about that one for a long time.
I agree, if you give up seven goals, you really aren’t in a good position to argue about calls. In general I believe that any sport with human officials will have bad calls but that over time they balance, making it part of the game.
What I don’t like is the “let them play, let the players decide, not the refs”. I take the view that the refs are there to make sure someone wins a hockey game not a street fight. But I’d hate to see it taken to an extreme to where it looks like soccer.
The Dallas Stars announce their attendance at 1.5 million fans, poking fun at Trump. Fairly bold statement from a team that plays in Texas, although Dallas proper is fairly liberal.

So, I had the NHL 100 thing on in the background. I turned it off after the voice over guy credited the Savardian Spin-O-Rama to Denis Savard.
I think this all-star game is one of the most pointless boring thing I’ve ever witnessed.
I really hate the All Star game. I hated it last year with the John Scott storyline. The NHL takes enough breaks, The gimmicks are getting old and the long break sucks.
