I absolutely can not wait for the Blackhawks/Red Wings game today. I’m hoping the Hawks keep their streak going and beat the snot out of the Red Wings.
They’re going to overtime in Detroit, so the Hawks push the points streak to 22.
It’s amazing, though not really comparable to the old streaks where a team actually had to not lose a game. The 79-80 Flyers went 35 straight games without losing a game at all; 25 wins, 10 ties.
There hasn’t been a full period of overtime since 1927 when it was reduced to 10 minutes. That was eliminated around WW2. Losses in those OT games were just counted as losses and no point was awarded.
The current 5 minute OT began in '83-4 though it was originally 5 skaters a side rather then the current 4
Huh. It seems you’re right. For some reason, I thought there were full overtime periods back then. Don’t know where I got that from. In my defense, I was 5 at the time, but, on the other hand, that would make RickJay’s point kind of, well, pointless, which I guess was the original point.
Even if there was, it wouldn;t matter, correct? Looks to me like the Hawks’ three OT losses have all been in shootouts. ending the game before or after OT would have made those three games ties.
Well, what I thought was the Flyers ties were after 80 minutes of hockey, not 65, so it would have mattered. Now that I realize that’s not the case at all, and OTs were the same, I can’t see any way this makes the streak less impressive (unless one of those losses were in OT for the Hawks, as you note, and none of them have been.)
I fully admit that I am not the world’s biggest hockey follower, but I did become a Kings fan about five years ago. Made it to the game tonight against the Blues and enjoyed a couple of good fights, along with a great comeback fueled by five unanswered goals. Just a fantastic night!
Watched the same game, but on TV, Asimovian. That comeback was just one step short of the Miracle on Manchester…ok…maybe last night’s game was two steps below MoM.
The Hawks’ streak is just as impressive. The Flyers didn’t have to face an extra layer of competition to avoid losing. If the rules were the same, the Flyers would have faced 10 shoot-outs in their streak. It is unlikely they would have won all 10.
What’s amazing is that both of these teams have played so many games in a row without being outscored in the initial 60 minutes.
This week has been the season in summary for Caps fans. Tuesday a big comeback from 3-0 to beat Boston in OT. Thursday an absolute blowout of Florida. Then there was the islanders game on Saturday. A 2-2 tie in the third followed by two different double minors and then giving up a short handed goal.
