NHL/Olympic Hockey: February 2010

I didn’t watch the game, but this was hilarious!

I heard about this here… this really sucks. It’s one thing to make fun of and insult people just for the sport team they work for, but at the end of the day, you could never really wish stuff like this on anyone. My condolences too. :frowning:

A hat trick for Ovie as the Caps rally to beat Pittsburgh in overtime for consecutive win number 14.

Man, I wish he could have played in the 1980s, taking shots on the short goalies with the old equipment and casual defences in front of them.

Well, that was certainly an entertaining game Saturday night, wasn’t it Rick?

Anybody know if this Niclas Wallin fellow any good?

He’s a depth guy; a fifth or sixth defenceman. Fun fact though; he has three career playoff goals, and all of them have came in overtime.

Bob Gainey is stepping down as GM of the Montreal Canadiens. He’ll be replaced by Pierre Gauthier, but staying on in an advisory role for the rest of the season. It seems the decision was made in December or so, when he decided not to seek an extension for his contract.

I think this drastically changes the goalie situation…it will be interesting to see what happens between now and the trade deadline!

That’s why we call him “The Secret Weapon”.

Gauthier has said that he will not trade either Price or Halak.

Let me get this straight. The Habs have Pierre Gauthier as their GM, Jacques Martin as their coach and Perry Pearn as an assistant coach? When does their arena get named to the Corel Centre?

I think he kind of didn’t answer the question directly, but certainly seemed to imply that both are here to stay until the end of the season, whenever that may be.

He also made comments to the effect of the Habs wanting to have Plekanec around next year, and the feeling that Pleks wants to stay, so that is a very good sign. I hope they sign him again soon. I don’t want to see him traded or allowed to slip away this summer.

It was awful. I’ll still be ruing that game when the playoff start and I’m watching the Sens.

I’d watch the Leafs during the playoffs, but I don’t think there’s a TV channel that covers offseason golf.

Touché.

I haven’t been following the Sens very closely, apart from being amazed at their latest winning streak. What’s the skinny on Elliot? Is he as good as his stats appear to be? Is Leclaire now the back-up?

He’s not as good as he was during that winning streak. No goalie is. Elliot’s young, and is still a raw talent. His two biggest weaknesses is that he sometimes just misses the puck(as he did on Toronto’s second goal, but didn’t do during the streak) and that his rebound control is uneven. Both, I think, are fixable problems with time and coaching.

Oh, and his puck handling skills are terrible. Did you see the crazy save he made against Hossa a couple of weeks ago? It was a nice(if incredibly lucky) save, but he set it up by managing to fumble the puck right to the front of his own net.

Jokinen, and Pitkanen get a goal and assist apiece, and Ruutu gets the empty netter as the Canes beat the Kitties in another Epic Finn.

Looks like the 'Canes will move their AHL affiliate from Albany to Charlotte next year, as per this press release. They will be known as the Charlotte Checkers, and play out of the Time Warner Cable Arena.

…and the Caps’ streak ends at 14.

Yeah!

Habs beat the Caps 6-5 in overtime, for the first Washington loss in 15 games. 'Course, they blew a 5-2 lead while doing it; giving up the tying goal late in the third. But they still pulled it out, with Plekanec scoring the winner.

I have to say I had an uneasy feeling when Montreal was leading 5-2 at the end of the second. I knew Washington would go to the offence out of necessity; and scoring three goals in twenty minutes would be easy for them.

That was one of the best games I’ve seen in a while, and I watched the Habs beat the Pens on Saturday! I wish Price could have kept the lead through the third, but I’ll take an OT win! I expect Halak will start against the Flyers on Friday.

The good news (other than the win, and stopping the Caps in their tracks) is that Josh Gorges was in the locker room after the game, which probably means his injury isn’t nearly as bad as it looked. He had quite a lot of blood oozing out from under his helmet after blocking that shot with his head, but it seems the helmet took the majority of the impact. The Canadiens can’t really afford to lose another player, especially not one of their better defencemen.

One goal and one assist for Tom Pyatt, and an assist for Desharnais, both called up from the 'Dogs. Awesome game.

Some last minute trades before the roster freeze:

Montreal picks up Dominic Moore from the Panthers for a second rounder next year.
Steve Wagner goes from the Blues to the Pens for Nate Guenin, a deal of predominantly minor league D-men.
Matt Cullen is Ottawa bound. Carolina gets Alexandre Picard and a second rounder this year.
And Jody Shelley is a Ranger; San Jose receives a sixth-rounder in 2011.

Habs lost, but Moore got a goal, and PK Subban got an assist in his first NHL game. I didn’t actually get to see it, and from what I heard, the team was crap tonight, but still, those are good signs, no?

I’m watching the Olympic opening ceremonies, and thinking it’s gotta suck a little to be one of the NHL players, who miss all this! The whales just blew me away! Having watched Ashley MacIssac open the games, I hope they got Spirit of the West for the closing ceremonies…“I’m so sick from the drink, I need home for a rest…take me home!”
