ASa displaced Kings fan, former season ticket holder, I am having a hard time coming to grips with what is likely going to happen. The Stanley Cup for the Kings? It is … unreal. And the way they are doing it, well that is like the cherry on the surreal sundae.
I just might have to break out my Chevy logo Vladimir Tsyplakov jersey.
If in fact they close it out in Game 4, they will join the 1988 Oilers as the only 16-2 teams in playoff history. Anyone who thought this year’s KINGS would be the team to match the mighty Oilers in that regard, raise your hands. Yeah, I don’t see a lot of hands.
It is the ultimate example of a team gelling at the exact right time. I used to go to Kings (and Lakers) games all the time when I was in High School in the early '80s. It was $3.50 if you had a student ID. It’s astounding to me to finally see them on the brink of a championship.
:dubious:
While I don’t disagree with the rest of your post, I really do think the Habs get the dubious honour of claiming that title.
:smack:
I actually don’t want this series to end in a sweep - I think the Devils deserve a better outcome than that, even though it’s definitely the Kings’ cup to lose at this point.
Soulmurk, these are the FLYERS fans. The people who booed Santa Claus. Don’t take it so seriously.
Therrien? You mean the guy the Pens fired, and then replaced by Dan Bylsma, who won the Cup the following year? That guy? Yeah.
Sorry, mnemosyne. Well, not really.
(And yes, before anyone says it, Therrien DID bring us to the finals the year before. I’d still take Disco Dan over him)
Funny how things work out in sports. The Stars lost their last five games of the regular season. If the Stars had won four of those games then it is likely that the Kings miss the playoffs. As it stands, the Kings are about to tie the standard for most efficient Stanley Cup win at 16-2. That is one hell of run- talk about peaking at the right time.
Hmm? I’m not taking anything too seriously, I don’t think. I suppose I should have included a  at the end of my post to convey the sarcastic dismissal I meant the statement to convey.
If I were taking it seriously I’d have commented on the ridiculousness of citing a defense helping a goalie as some sort of weakness.
Perhaps. I was speaking more statistically. LA’s shooting percentage was bad during the regular season. Unsustainably bad. You could theoretically replace your team with AHLers and score more bad. John MacLean era Devils bad.
That they were still able to hold the fort and eke into the playoffs makes me realize, in retrospect, just how important Quick has been to them. Enough so that I’d change my vote for the Vezina right now (though I know they’re already cast) from Lundqvist to Quick. I’d also give him the Hart, the Richard and every other piece of metal the League hands out. He carried that team until they were able to turn their luck around and I got to see firsthand last season just how difficult a thing it is to overcome a long, early run of such miserable luck when the Devils finally righted the ship under Lemaire and rallied but ultimately fell short. He is their everything and has been all season and deserves all the accolades for it.
With Brodouche turning up with his best save (from his large ass), it’s clear the Kings had butterflies galore. Playing defensively way too much, whiffs on the puck, missed passes-- they just weren’t ready tonight. And a stupid penalty from Mitchell at the end just blew all the oxygen out of the arena.
Even so Montreal still outscored LA. The Habs were a bit below average and will assuredly have better luck going forward, but a big part of their problem was not in converting shots, it was in getting shots.
The Kings out shot the Canadiens on the season by 169 shots and managed 19 less goals. It seems minor but if they had scored goals at the same rate as even a slightly under-performing team like the Habs they’d have had 220 goals instead of 188. On the flip side, if the Canadiens had shot as poorly as the Kings had they’d have managed only 175 goals instead of 207.
The only team I think was even close to LA in bad luck this past year was the Wild.
Boy I love that Henrique kid. He’s going to be something special.
They live to fight another day, but their chances are still slim. Lots of obscure stats being thrown around before the game-- the Devils maintain the longest running number of 7 game series played in any of the big four American sports without being swept. I have no idea where they find this stuff but wonder who would have taken over had they lost.
Damn…I just saw Devils cloggy last night…worked for them…grats. That game could have gone either way…Penner alone had two great chances. But alas, most of the game fours for the Kings are the only stumbling block towards perfection. Now they can spend the next 2 days on how to counter that effectively and finish this series on Saturday.
Sidenote: After a visiting team win, ever notice that the trash on the ice is directly proportional to the trash in the stands? Keep that in mind if/when the Kings win on Devil’s ice…crappy Devil’s ice.
