Nice CD packaging, Sony...not

Not even remotely Pit-worthy, but annoying just the same.
I finally got around to buying the new Tori Amos CD, “The Beekeeper”. I got the “deluxe” version with the DVD. It’s not in a standard jewel case. Instead, it’s in a cardboard binder-like holder with the lyrics pages bound in like a booklet. There’s also two envelopes that hold the CD & DVD that are also bound in. As a bonus, there’s a pack of flower seeds.

The problem? The horizontal and vertical dimensions are reversed!

A standard jewel case is 5 5/8" wide by 4 7/8" tall. This CD is just the opposite.

I have a CD shelf unit with adjustable shelves and I have to turn this CD sideways for it to fit.

Why must they do things like this?

Did you measure a jewel case or do you just know those dimensions off the top of your head?

Does this CD have the title on the side that will be facing out or will you just have to guess what it is?

Why do they do this? They are Sony! They answer to no standards! From Betamax to memory sticks they will draw you in to the Sony empire and sell you overpriced proprietary versions of the same stuff other companies sell. That is, until they tire of your green and just dump you on the slag heap of discontinued technology. Just wait, a year from now you’re going to have your Sony CD rack (with the dimensions reversed) sitting next to your standard CD rack and it’ll only cost you three times as much!

CD racks… how quaint.

Here’s something to give you nightmares: I pitched all my jewel cases for every CD I own, and keep them in one big honkin’ binder. I didn’t even save the lyric books! I never buy CDs anymore and a couple of years ago, I just quit caring.

You…threw away…the lyrics books?

Yup. If it’s in English, I know what they’re saying, if it isn’t in English I don’t care. :stuck_out_tongue:

Heck, I ripped the tracks off of every CD I own, threw them all in a box, and stuffed the box in my closet. Google provides me with hints to incomprehensible lyrics. I am one with my computer.

I come from the day of albums (remember those?).

I could put all my CDs in a binder, but where’s the fun in that?

Besides, the anal retentive person within must have something to organize!

My CDs (and albums, too, which I still have on shelves) are arranged alpha by artist and then descending by year.

Various artist compilations (of which I have quite a few) are arranged alpha by title.

As for the dimensions of the CD jewel case, I just measured it before posting.

The Tori Amos CD has its title on the spine, which must know face up. I have a few of her CD singles (I don’t know if it’s her idea or her record label (Atlantic at the time) to release a single with unreleased tracks on it. Bruce Springsteen (or Columbia) would release 45s (how’s that for old!) the same way) and they are taller than a standard jewel case that must be shelved sideways.

Sheesh. That is anal-retentive.

Alpha, schmalfa. I’m just happy if mine are organized by genre. Once, Norwegian Blue mixed them all up on purpose after I’d spent hours arranging them. He thought he was teaching me a lesson for being anal-retentive. Let’s just say that were he color-blind he’d never notice how colorfully organized his tee shirts now are.

Did I mention he despises that?
MUWAAAHAHAHAAAA!

I kind of assumed that Tori just liked “alternative” packaging. It’s probably just someone being creative at the record company, but a lot of her stuff is packaged oddly.

Btw, how do you like the new album? I haven’t heard it yet, but Rolling Stone gave it a “meh” review. Of course, Rolling Stone is a boy’s club, and has never liked Tori, so I take that with a very large grain of salt.
