Nice LITTLE Shows

This one was awesome. Very low-budget in that Doctor Who-ish way, but well done. And Malcom McDowell!

Yes to these two.

A few days ago I checked out of curiosity to see how many series I had full unwatched seasons of on my HD. It was 97. Didn’t count number of seasons, but probably close to 150. So what In sayng is that I’m really starting to regret bumping this thread.

And in series 2 they travel to the 1950s. I thought it was very funny.

Are you streaming this? Where, pray tell?

Another couple short run shows worth watching.
GLOW, which was only going to be 4 seasons but ended up getting canceled (covid) after the third.

Pushing Daisies. 22 Episodes total. This one is best left unexplained, IMO, just watch the first episode and see if you like it (and, personally, I liked it a whole lot more than Dead Like Me).

I don’t know if you consider it ‘little’, but Schitt’s Creek.

Santa Clarita Diet. Really, really funny show…and really gory, but in a really funny way. I think I’ve watched it 3 or 4 times now.

American Vandal. 16 episode mocumentry clearly satirizing Making A Murderer. It’s very well done and while it’s a satire (parody?), it doesn’t feel like one. It doesn’t feel like you just watched Angie Tribeca or Airplane, other than the crime that took place.

Making A Murderer. I think everyone should watch this show.

The People Vs OJ (if you go looking for it, it’s season 1 of American Crime Story). 10 episodes of Sarah Paulson, need I say more. Actually, I do want to add something. I was watching Naked Gun over the weekend and learned that OJ’s wife in the movie played a juror in this show.

I know these for the most part have fewer episodes than The Office but most or all of those shows are Emmy winners and were extremely popular, high-budget, big name shows.

I wouldn’t consider them to be anything like, say, Detroiters.

Well, I for one appreciate discovering new shows, popular or not. I’d assume there are others reading this thread and making a list of “Cool Shows That Dopers Say I Should Watch”.

Thanks so much, gang.

I mean, I’m also collecting a list of said shows. Really great recommendations.

But if we’re not gonna try to focus a thread on a specific topic, every thread should just be like “Name some TV shows” or “Name some movies.”

Tryin’ to dig up some obscure shows here, not Schitt’s Creek.

While I’d certainly call Detroiters low budget, Schitt’s Creek was not a high budget show. Just about every interview with Dan Levy spends at least some time with him talking about how little money the show was given and how he’d spend a lot of late nights trying to find cheap used clothes on ebay for his wardrobe.

Beyond that, I can’t know what shows you’ve seen or heard of. Schitt’s Creek had been running for a few seasons when I heard of it and a few more years when I finally started watching it.

I rather liked Devs, a (planned) one-off single season sci-fi show on Hulu.

Does this stream in the USA? I can’t even find it on justwatch.com

Is this show like Galavant?

Hm. Looks like maybe not. The UK version has it, but even there only seasons 2 and 3 and the first episode of season 1.

Didn’t see this mentioned here, but Norsemen on Netflix is 3 seasons, 6 episodes each.
I would describe it as a cross between The Office and Monty Python, set in a Viking village. Very dark, cerebral and hilarious.

Apparently Timewasters is getting an American remake, but I assume they’ll take a lot of the swears and rude bits out, which would water it down considerably.

I have to admit that I’m skeptical that you can make an American comedy that pokes fun at blackface, for instance.

These are all nice little shows. It would be awful if anything bad were to happen to one of them…

Some nice little shows - “Dracula” (three episodes wraps it all up).
“Love Death & Robots” - a series of shorts that blew my freaking mind.
Australian show “Spirited” - a newly divorced woman sees ghosts, hijinks ensue.
Agreed on “Ted Lasso” recommendation - surprisingly engaging show.
“Good Girls Revolt” - set in the sixties, it’s a story of women becoming reporters at a paper instead of just typing.
“Fleabag” - it has three seasons, and you’ve probably heard hype about it, but it is so good that I’m still going to recommend it.
“Mindhunter” - about the development of serial killer profiling. Disturbing and compelling.
“Doom Patrol” - weird and entertaining.
“Loaded” - game developers sell their little game for millions, get rich, we watch what happens.

Danger 5. 2012 series from Australia, 13 episodes. It’s a comedy series about an international team of secret agents who battle Hitler and his evil plans. Except it’s intentionally really cheesy with really bad special effects (think Thunderbirds level), it doesn’t look like it takes place during WWII (season 2 is a parody of every 80’s movie cliche), and Hitler’s evil plans include dinosaurs and a giant flying Hitler robot made out of world monuments. You’ll either think it’s brilliant or wonder what the hell is this crap.

ETA; TLDR: Better Off Ted

I’m gonna toss out Life In Pieces. Maybe it doesn’t count for this thread. It ran for 3.5 seasons (79 episodes), had an all star cast (James Brolin, Dianne Weist, Colin Hanks, Betsy Brandt etc) and was really good. But, for whatever reason, flew way under the radar.

Another one, that I think absolutely qualifies for this thread and I think everyone should watch it multiple times is Better Off Ted. The comedy is on par with Arrested Development (and I’m not just saying that because Portia de Rossi is in it), but it’s a bit…easier to digest. I fully understand why some people don’t like Arrested Development, Better Off Ted, on the other hand, is more of a typical office sitcom, just a bit faster paced and wittier.
Another nice thing about Better Off Ted, and this is true of other shows (AD and Scrubs come to mind), even if you’re unfamiliar with it, you can watch any random episode and be up to speed pretty quickly because there’s a narrator that often sets up the scene.
Also, it’s only 2 seasons of 13 episodes each, so it’s easy to blast through the entire series in a weekend (and then again the next weekend).

Anyone who likes trucks should watch “Outback Truckers” on Netflix. Nice blokes and Shielas here, unlike those assholes up on the ice; Russell McDonough – the bloke with the mobile car crusher – is fun to watch in particular.

Unfortunately, Netflix only has the first three seasons out of 8 and counting.
