Nice Update There, Assholes!

I sign on to the net and get one of those all too common “Update Alerts” from Microsoft. This one telling me that it’s needed to help recover corrupted files. So, I tell it to download and install the update. Reboot the machine (can’t you guys make an update that doesn’t require rebooting?), and discover, lo and behold, one of the programs installed on my machine doesn’t work. I get to playing around with it, trying to get it installed, and discover that all the various log files it needs have been corrupted. Gee, I wonder how that could have happened? Ya know, I think my next box is gonna be a linux based one.

Just out of interest, which program was it that got farked?

Well, that might just be a serendipitous update.

I just reloaded the BBQ Pit after being away for a few hours, this was the first thread I opened, and I simultaneously got the update dialogue.

Here’s a nice ironic screen-grab.
I think I’ll hold off on the database corruption logging thing. Thanks for the heads-up! I’m interested in knowing the specifics of the sabotage, too.

Ahhh, once again procrastination pays off. I too have the same Updates waiting to be installed. Luckily, I didn’t want to have to reboot my computer right now, so I used the “Remind me later” option. Thanks for the heads up Tuckerfan!

Not to try and turn a well deserved Pit Thread into something educational, but does anyone know of a site (other than Microsoft of course) where they have reviews of these updates? I’d like to be able to check them out before I install them.

What’s stopping you from making your current machine Linux, if that’s what you want to run?

To quickly hijack the thread, I installed Redhat 7.2 a few months back, and I love it. I have a dual boot 98/linux, and strongly recommend you do it. Search GQ, as my thread was labeled “help liberate me from windows” or something like that. All the info should be there. If not look on the web or feel free to ask.

The program that got farked was Proximo (think that’s how it’s spelled, Fenris turned me on to it). The reason that I have a Windows based PC and haven’t made the jump to Linux (though I do have Mandrake 8.2 running under VMware) is that I’ve got several programs which are Windows only (no Linux versions available) that I need to run for school.

I’m guess Windows XP.
