Nickelodean Sucks!

I’m not sure if Doug is still on Nick. I remember it was on Noggin, though.

Who here remembers You Can’t Do That On Television? I remember watching snippets of it before we got cable, and was disapointed to see they took it off the air when we did get cable. I do remember what a neat show that was.

I also loved Hey Dude.

Last I saw Doug, it was on several different channels (I’ve seen it on Nick, the Disney channel, and maybe even Kids WB )…personally, if it wasn’t for Spongebob Squarepants and Invader Zim, I’d add the channel to the blocked ones on my TV (ahh, technology)

The Raven (who is washing my new Zim shirt even as I type bwahahaha)

Nick canceled Doug, then Disney/ABC made new episodes with a different theme song, some different voices, and a different haircut for Patty. They were ok, but not as good as the originals.

It’s a darn shame. The Adventures of Pete and Pete was one of the finest television shows ever produced.

SpongeBob rules. It rivals the Simpsons for making me laugh. Thornberries is great, and has good morals. Fairly Oddparents makes me laugh, too, especially Cosmo. Rugrats is still a great show.

I am a parent. I watch these shows with my daughter, and in general I am careful what I let her see. Nickelodeon has some fantastic programming.

… and I stood on the set of “The Amanda Show”, too. It was not filming just then, but it was still kinda cool. Especially the signs in the bathroom that say, “Amanda says wash your hands after going to the bathroom.”

The only show I watch on Nick are the “All in the Family” re-runs, and they cut them all to hell just to squeeze in a few more commercials. Bastards.

Has anyone else but me seen As Told By Ginger? It’s such a shame-it’s one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time.

I don’t know if it’s any different elsewhere, but at least locally, Doug is played on the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. And here, they are one channel apart. And on Saturdays, there is actually a time when it’s on both channels at the same time. Yuck. I only sort of liked that show when it was new, now it’s just annoying (That’s MHO, though.)

And, hey! My name is on the FUS Comic page of that Sonic SatAM site (though it is sort of spelled wrong.) That was a great show. Probably my favorite American TV show (besides the more adult stuff like The Simpsons, of course.) And I’ll be sure to get the DVDs when they come out (Yay!!) And, I just realized something else. Dan Drazen’s name is also on that page, and on this Straight Dope article. It’s a small, small world.

Umm YCDTOT is exactly what this is a rant against…

Remember that it was all booger and puke jokes with people getting covered in nasty ass slime.

WHat I wonder, is how the hell do you justify your existance (TM–The Onion) if you’re 40 and your job is to get green slime poured on you 5 days a week?

To make money by airing popular shows and thereby attracting advertisers?

Dumbass.

ZIM!!

I actually like Nickelodeon for the most part. Their cartoons are often somewhat less puerile than the ones I’ve seen on network TV. Rugrats has gone sadly downhill and I miss Pete and Pete (how cool is a kids’ show that has Iggy Pop as a returning character and Kate Pierson, Syd Straw, Michael Stipe, all of Luscious Jackson and so many others on as guests?), but many of the others mentioned are not bad, and Invader Zim covers many sins.

They have shirts now?

that’s just plain “Kool”, “Kinka”.

YES!! I finally know what time Invador Zim is on! I’ve been trying to find it on Nick for a long time now, after seeing one episode. Thank you, Dopers!

As for other good shows, I watched the Fairly Odd Parents yesterday and believe that I’m now addicted to it. It’s not as funny as Rocko and Pete & Pete, but those were two of the greatest shows ever made, so I’m not expecting them to be matched.

ZIM!!! ::goes into a spasm of drool and joy:: I know someone who is Gir. Hee, Gir! Raven, where did you get your T-shirt? I need one for me and one for the Zim-worshipping boyfriend.

I dunno, IMHO Nick is better now than it has been in years. The shows seem to be a lot more intelligent than the days of Ren & Stimpy and YCDTOT (can you believe Alanis Morrissette came from that show?) But this is speaking as a 21-year-old and not a parent nor, for that matter, anyone with any interest at all in what kids watch, so maybe my opinion isn’t worth much. All I can tell you is that I watch it as much now as I did when I was a kid, FWIW.

Nick dipped.

IMHO though the best and most exciting show Nick ever put on was “The Mysterious Cities of Gold” about three young children Tau, Zia and … I forget the Spanish boys name. But they had a flying golden condor. It was a French anime show. Really good and now nobody will show it because it’s TOO adult. I know where it is on rm and watched it all, ooh. Then there were the original “Rugrats” where they had great and fun adventures. And Pete and Pete were absolutely hilarious.

Follwed by a period of not so good.

But now they got Invader ZIM!, SpongeBob SquarePants and The Fairly Oddparents. All of which are hilarious and insanely quoteable.

But CN still beats them with Samurai Jack and Home Movies. But not by much.

SpongeBob SquarePants!

WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE!?

Ren and Stimpy was a masterwork as well. “Don’t piss on the electric fence” has the same effect on me as Unca Cece’s “Shaking hands with Jesus.” I’ve always been above 99.9% of all American cartoons (the joys of having a high IQ, I guess) but those really crack me up.

Nick has sucked ever since they fired John Kricfalusi from Ren and Stimpy.

:stuck_out_tongue:
I’ve had my Invader Zim shirt for a week now! A WEEK!!!
Okay, I got mine at Hot Topic. I hate going into that store because its always so crowded and getting soo trendy. But yeah…I walked in to browse quickly saw invader zim, freaked out for about 5 minutes. Picked up a shirt, went to register bought shirt and a Patrick sticker from Spongebob for my boyfriends guitar. I am now a proud owner of a Zim shirt. It has Zim with Gir dancing around him. The shirt says “I’m dancing like a monkey!”

I love Spongebob though I don’t watch it as much. I love Zim and the Fairly Oddparents too.

Kids (I hate the word kid. It sounds so vulgar and demeaning) QUOTE]

I used to work for Nickelodeon and we were under strict orders to use the terms “kid” and “grown-up” as opposed to “child” and “adult.” I prefer the term “kid”, “child” sounds too precious. Nick’s philiosophy is to empower kids, to give them a place to have their voices and opinions heard, and to shake as much allowance out of the little buggers as they can. It’s no coincidence that Nick, Mtv, and VH-1 are all owned by Viacom. The idea is that they’re getting kids’ brand loyalty at a young age with Nick, then they feed them the whole boy band/Britney Spears stuff to get them ready for Mtv. That keeps them in Viacom’s pocket through their teens and early 20’s. When they outgrow the tits-and-ass laden programming there, they move on to the more mature VH-1. That’s why you see so much more programming on Mtv and VH-1 than you used to, in an odd way, they’re mimicking Nickelodeon. It’s definitely an indoctrination of sorts.
