Something in Your Mouth is the latest Nickleback homage to Oral Sex. The song rips some nice chords but the lyrics are about as obvious as… well, a dick in the mouth. All that aside, I hate it because it’s an obvious rip-off of the well known song Lil Devil by The Cult.
The riff is nearly the same, the lyrical style is even derivative. What do you think musical dopers, ripoff or not?
Gee, devilsknew, I don’t think it’s close enough to call it larceny. The guitar tone is similar, and in both there’s a note at the end of a phrase that’s cut short by the heel of the hand. I could see how one reminds you of the other, but you could probably find a dozen other songs that remind you of that lick. Some of them were recorded before The Cult did Li’l Devil.
This reminds me of something my guitar teacher used to say on stage to gently fend off a request. “No, we don’t do that song, but we do this other song that has all the same chords as that one.”
I’m by no means a Nickelback fan, but I heard songs sound a lot more similar than those two. I’d say not really a ripoff. Maybe a definite stylistic influence, though. The Nickelback riff is, of course, simpler and actually quite a bit different to my ears, in terms of the pattern and notes. Same/similar key, similar vibe, though.
