The line that struck me as odd was the claim that the source said he wasn’t under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time.
That’s usually something that’s determined by a medical examiner. In other words, if he just slammed in to a tree a couple hours ago, it’s unlikely that information about blood work or intoxicants would be available.
Still, I guess you never know.
I’m leaning towards hoax. I found a yahoo answers post from 5 months ago that also claimed snowboarding accident.

Just for the record, this page triggered a “malicious page” security alert from my employer’s IT — and they basically don’t block ANYTHING.

This should make it clear that the source is quite, ahem, questionable.
