Can anyone think of any possible relationship or connection between the historical “Night of the Long Knives” and what is going on in the World now?
Only thing that pops into my mind is that some Islamic states (Pakistan, Iran, etc) may be trying to use the US to rid themselves of some of the more radical/militant groups within their own borders before they (the militants) try to grab power.
One problem we have in the west is that many of us think that Moslems are an homogenous religious group.
This then leads on to thinking of “them” and labelling “them” in a particular way, which could easily be seen as being racist.
In Islamic nations there’s a wide range of opinions, values, interpretations and sects, just as in any other major religious belief system.
These various groupings compete for power in differant ways some are governments, some would like to be governments, there are those who are corrupt, pragmatic, ascetic and tolerant, but probably not in the same package.
Many of these groups see each other as the major threats, a Saudi leader might well see terrori0st groups such as Bin Laden’s as a bigger threat to their own security than the US.
The problem is that it could be dangerous to be seen siding with the US, the Pakistani authorities are having to tread very carefully, since there is a lot of support for the idea of anti-Americanism in that country. This support may not approve totally of the actions of the WTC terrorists at the moment but it would not take much to nudge it in that direction.
It is possible, likely even, that some of those leaders in the Islamic world would like to see these more radical elements destroyed but cannot announce this publicly for fear of their own public opinion and would be happy enough to see the US take all the heat for disposing of this threat to themselves and so may provide covert aid.
Those leaders then get the benefit of the removal of their opponents plus none of the responsability and blame, from their POV it’s a pretty good deal.
Only in the realms of wild-eyed conspiracy theory.
If I understand what they are raving about, they see an analogy.
In Germany in between WWI and WWII, the Nazi party staged some horrific event and used it as an excuse to sweep themselves into power.
The conspiracy theorists say that the Evil Cabal™ who is pulling the strings of the current US government (with floridated water and orbital mind-control lasers) have staged the World Trade Center disaster in order to further their sinister agenda.
