Once in a while, when I’m up late at night (like now), I’ll remember Night Stand, a talk show parody that was on in the mid-90’s. It was “hosted” by Dick Dietrich (Timothy Stack, a That Guy that was also in Parker Lewis Can’t Lose and Castaway). I don’t remember many specifics about the show. I do remember stumbling across it one night when I was staying at a friend’s house, and how I would struggle to stay awake until 2 am on Saturday night to catch an episode. The first show I saw, my friend and I just kept cracking up and arguing about whether or not it was real.
Speaking of shows that need to be put out on DVD, this is one of them. It’s entirely possible that being tired, and having watched it several years ago, have resulted in remembering it being better than it was, but I guess that’s the great thing about memories. Anyway, this was a great show.
I remember nightstand being pretty funny, and one of my friends and I still refer to that actor as Dick Dietrich, but I almost never find the same stuff funny when I go back to it several years later. I’d rather keep my memories than spoil them.
My best friend and her husband were in the studio audience of an early (possibly the first) episode. It was the one with Garry Marshall plugging a (fake) show about three crime-solving bimbos. “Oh no, this computer runs Apple and I only know DOS (pronounced “dose”)!”
Kinda lame, sometimes amusing, not something I went out of my way to catch.
I can’t watch Crossing Jordan, because the guy who played “Astounding Andy” on Night Stand is on it, and I keep picturing him making that weird hand motion and saying, “Thank you!” after every little thing.
I haven’t seen this show since it was originally on, but I remember liking it. I don’t remember a lot of specific moments anymore, but one that has stayed with me (and still amuses me) is when Dick Dietrich refered to lesbians as “vagaterians”.
I loved this show! I also agree with the OP that it should be released on DVD, or at least re-run the episodes so the Nightstand faithful can TiVo them. Comedy Central would be a good home for it, or possibly Nick at Nite–after all, if they could run that lame-ass ALF talk show, they should be able to find room for something that was actually funny !My favorite moments were when Dick would make an “unintentional” double entendre, the audience would snicker, and Dick, after a brief pause, would turn to them and say “Oh, no, people, people, no!” And “Crossing Jordan”'s Steve Valentine was not the only familiar face in a recurring role. Dick used to periodically showcase a “Famous Hollywood Plastic Surgeon” who was played by Andrew Prine, a veteran of many, many ‘70’s TV episodes and TV movies. And wasn’t that him as Nick Stokes’ dad in this year’s season finale of CSI?
True, but that’s what’s great about DVD. You can buy it and wind up disappointed, or realizing again that it’s a great show. If it’s on in syndication, then you could stumble on it by accident. I think DVD is better, because that way you have more control over the situation.
Good memories of the show, folks. It’s good to see there are some other fans.
