"Nightline Will Not Be Seen Tonight..."

I live not far from San Antonio, Texas. My cable is via Time/Warner cable.

A while back, as many of you know, there was some huhu about the news show Nightline, and how they were going to make a whole broadcast out of reading the names of the American war dead.

There was more huhu when a certain well-known media conglomerate made sure that their affiliates would not be airing that broadcast.

Didn’t think much about it until today.

For most of the day, today, my digital cable online menu/guide has been out of order. That is to say, everything works… but the onscreen guide of programming simply says “No data available.” Every channel. All day long, I have not been able to see what was on at any time.

This evening, I decided to see if it worked yet. Still doesn’t work.

And instead of Nightline, the local ABC affiliate is showing Inside Edition, with Michael Jackson and prom dresses leading their top stories.

Now it’s true, I don’t know whether or not they normally show Nightline or not. I don’t normally watch ABC for news.

But between the failure of the local news station to show that particular episode of Nightline… and the sudden failure of my onscreen programming guide, to find out when any other showings of that broadcast may be shown… I am feeling more than a bit paranoid, you know?

Like there’s something that may be on that someone big does not want me to see.

Just thought I’d share this with you all. Any other San Antonio or central Texas-area dopers having this problem? How about anyone else on the continent?

This thread reminded me. Tape in now (11:55 EST). Wontt have all the names, but I’m willing to send it to you if you’d like.

Very…somber isn’t the right word, but the commercials are killing the mood.

Nice tribute to the fallen, IMHO.

I’ve got Time Warner cable in NYC and I’m watching Nightline right now.

Your local affiliate may be owned by Sinclair Group. There’s a Pit thread about it.

Keep watching. It’s not on yet there. KSAT indeed shows Inside Edition until 11:05 or so your time and then carries Nightline. Should be starting right about now.

Very moving. I didn’t see the “political agenda” that was causing concern. Final thought was articulated very well.

I wish I had seen it from the beginning.

A friend posted this note:
“Producer Leroy Sievers noted that the idea for the show came from a Life Magazine cover in 1969, which showed all those who died in Vietnam that week.”

Wife woke up at five a.m. to make a potty stop.

Afterwards, she thought to check the cable. At 5 a.m., the onscreen guides were working perfectly. She remarked that it felt a bit chilling to think that the onscreen guides were offline most of Friday… and then, somehow, got repaired between midnight and five a.m.

Yeah, yeah, I know. Probably paranoia, likely just Murphy’s law. But durned if it doesn’t seem a bit chilling.
