Nihongo

I dont know if there are enough people on here who speak Japanese to make this worthwhile, but we’ll give it a shot.

Let’s practice Japanese.

Watashi ha Rob desu. Ima, Nihon no Nagoyashi ni sundeimasu. Hachi gatsu ni America he kaerimasu. Anatatachi ha doshite Nihongo wo hanasemasuka?

Akira Kurosawa. Nagano. Tekka maki. Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto.

Dear god, this is frightening!

I have never taken Japanese; all I know is from linguistics courses and from my husband, who took some in university. Yet I think I understand this!

Sometimes I scare myself.

I’m not going to hazard a translation, though.

Hajimemashite.

Watashi no tomodachi wa nihonjin o deshita. Nihongo o benkyoo shimashita ga zen’zen joozu arimasen.
Nihon e wa ryokoo shimasen deshita.

Nani o ‘romanji sistemu’(system) o anata wa kakimasu? Watashi wa “Hepburn Sistemu” kakimasu.

Sorosoro shitsurei shimasu.

Jaa, mata ashita!

That probably reads like Babelfish on LSD.

Ok, a word on systems. There are three systems used for writing Japanese sounds in English: Hepburn, which is the easiest and most widely used; Official, which you only find on street signs printed by the government before 1970; and Nihon-shiki which I have never seen and dont know how to use.

However, you can use any system you want as long as everyone else understands what you wrote. Too bad the message board doesnt handle Japanese script. You can download a Microsoft Global IME for your computer that will let you read and write Japanese in HTML environments, if you are interested.

KP san, are ha totemo omoshiroi. Naze nihon ni kitta koto ga arimasen? Nihon ryori ha oishii.

the Board can handle script from the IME. You gotta have the fonts, and actively set your display font to it, under

View->Encoding.

Here’s some stuff with my Chinese IME:

Äã ºÃ. ÎÒ ½Ð °¬ Ô¼ º². ÎÒ ×¡ Muncie. ÎÒ Ñ§Ï° ººÓï. ÎÒ ÐÇÆÚÈÕ¸úÎÒ ººÓï°à È¥ Öйú.

It works but the font is kinda teensy. There’s a thing under View called Text Size that fixes that.

To make sure you get the right characters above, use Chinese Simplified GB2312. The other fonts give characters, but the wrong ones. At least, not the ones I meant to display.

Hey thanks, I didnt know that. Naturally, I will be using Japanese IME rather than the simplified Chinese, although I think I have that on here too. Actually, my computer is running the Japanese version of Win98, so I get Japanese all over the place.

Mae no nihongo dekiru hito wa doko ni ikimashitaka? America ni chotto osoku natta kamoshiranai. shitsureishimasu.

Just checking my ability to post in Japanese script.
