Nil as a subtitle language on Chinese DVD

I’m watching a corny Chinese DVD called Ghost Story (the subtitling is so bad, I think they were going for parody) that has the option of Nil for a language. What culture speaks this language and what is it related to?

Nil could mean no subtitles.

The term “nil” is a commonly-used symbol in programming to mean “nothing” (as opposed to zero, which is a number, ie. “something”). Sometimes these internal representations spill out into the user interface by mistake. DVDs are created with computer software. From this one may suppose you’re in possession of a shoddily-constructed DVD, perhaps a bootleg.
