I have no idea he managed to accumulate enough dough to afford this place, and it’s undoubtedly better decorated now than it was when he had it, but I’d have felt a lot less sorry for Nixon as he helicoptered off into obscurity if I’d known his retirement was to be spent here. Absolutely gorgeous!
Based on the notes, it looks like they paid between $360k and $1.4 million for it in 1969. Even accounting for inflation, it seems to have appreciated quite a bit.
I was all ready to be sniffy about it but…it fits the surroundings wonderfully and is about as low-key and tasteful as $75 million can buy. It is a beautiful house and the original designers did a great job. The cyprus trees particularly are a great choice.
(Jokes about bugs and plumbers, not worth the effort)
My tastes are more modest and cosmopolitan: for 8.5 million, the house in LA built by Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman nineteen rooms: seven of them bathrooms. make of that what you will.
Note that a lot of upgrades were made to the place at tax-payer expense. Nixon said that he was going to donate it to the government to make up for that. That didn’t happen. Nixon lied? I am shocked.
If I had the money ----------- like a shot. Nixon is still one of those odd love/hate figures of my younger days but such a memory that I would just HAVE to own it.
