Crazyhorse: REALLY appreciate you working on this. I’ll be thrilled to see your code when it goes live.
ETA: willing to test it if you can PM me the code. I won’t get around to it until 9pm on June 21st though (today) since I’m going to bed shortly and my work computer can’t do that.
It makes perfect sense. That was always the gotcha involved in GM avatar scripts - everyone would need to maintain a hard-coded list of avatars themselves and consult with others about what they wanted their avatar to be.
But **ntucker **generously offered a CGI that makes much quicker work of parsing SDMB profiles than GM can, so you can just put a URL to your desired avatar in your regular SDMB user profile, and it will appear automatically to anyone who uses the script.
And once you use the script if anyone adds a line begging “SDMB Avatar: (url here)” to their SDMB profile you will automatically see their avatar without editing anything.
It is still a little bit of extra work and bandwidth on the client but it doesn’t seem too bad. If you’d like to test it I can mail you the same PM with instructions and the script. (I make no warranty of anything except that it seems to be working for me so far.)
It’s a discussion forum. If you want to just say stuff with no comeback, do a blog (with comments disabled).
In answer to your question, yes I think it is a good thing that you have now (and it is only just now; you make it sound like you had admitted this already) retracted your accusation of flawed reasoning. Let’s move on.
Hijack: I think you would have had a good chance of winning. Under U.S. law, registration is required before filing a copyright infringement claim, but it doesn’t matter how long prior to the claim. You can register on Day 1 and sue on Day 2. The real issue is the expense of fighting a claim in a different country. You would have to prepare for the possibility of having to make the journey.
